Summer Waterproof Jacket

Post by Chew »

I'm on the lookout for a new waterproof jacket for summer use.

Something which packs as small as possible, and will keep the worst of a summer shower off for an hour or so.
After that i'll get out the bin bags if needed.....

Any recommendations?

Berghaus hypersmock. Mines the lightest waterproof in the world. It's tiny. But very fragile. Used for commuting, it lives in my commuting bag

If I wore it on the MTB I'd kill it by crashing or branches/thorns/brambles

Same here - this was the one I was wearing at the weekend... I have crashed in it and the elbow has patches now so easily repairable but I know it's fragile... did keep me pretty dry during a full on Cairngorms downpour... hood goes over Buff and under helmet easily.

Jas has a really small Marmot (no hidden meaning) thing from some ultra running place - might be worth looking on those sorts of 'specialist websites'.

I was pleasantly surprised by this, it's actually waterproof and breathable!

I 've an Altura jacket that I think is a predecessor to this one https://www.altura.co.uk/products/detai ... et/?ng=149 Fine for a summer shower but I wouldn't take it in winter or if there's going to be serious cold rain.

Took the words out of my mouth re the Squalline, I have one but given my location, I've yet to test it's waterproof qualities but it's a good windproof. Is it the model Kenny was wearing on last years biblical BB 300.

R@pha core jacket, sure it’s below the £100 make and it’s certainly exceeded my expectations. Certainly the best 2.5 layer jacket I’ve used

Does come up a little short and I find the fire-arms a little tight but I guess roadies don’t have arm muscles :-bd

'kinell, that AGU Secco EVO jacket for twenty quid that Stu pointed out looks like amazing value. Dunno what the weight is though. Would have one like a shot if I didn't already have my Berghaus Hyper Condom Smock thing, as mentioned above.

Montane minimus....

Keela Saxon...

Both seem to fit your criteria Chew :???: and both under 250g

Sorry if you've already invested... I just came across whilst investigating the Keela brand and this -http://scramblekit.uk/review/index.php? ... ain-jacket - guy speaks highly of both. He maybe knows a thing or two ashe also covers his face for the pics !!

I have two of those... mostly because I always have one too dirty to wear at any one time!

Think this one is coming top of the list.
How small does it back down?

I do rate Windstopper Active shell material. I've got a 7Mesh Resistance jacket made from it and it's great. Not rated as fully waterproof (maybe 5K at a guess?) but very light (~120g), packable and breathable enough (the 7Mesh jkt is vented, helps). Works fine in up to an hour or two's rain, will wet through after a bit but slowly, I've been happy in it for a wet day as long as I have warm when damp kit underneath. Better than Pertex equivalent ime and though I'd rather have Goretex Active for really wet weather it's a fair bit bulkier.

I have a Montane jacket made with Pertex Shield, the 7Mesh is more water proof than that and the Pertex delaminated rapidly, maybe just the experience I had but wasn't that impressed by the fabric overall.

Oh, and the Kalf Lightweight jacket is worth a look - really good for the money, not used it enough to be sure but tempted to say it's a close run to the 7Mesh in fabric and weight, just a lot lower rrp.

If you use the sack it's slightly less tall than an average apple, but longer.

More often than not I just fold it up and throw it in a jersey pocket though.

Spend the money and get the Benghaus. I have one and at first I was too scared to wear it in case I ripped it. But no I have realised it’s very tough I wear it all the time.

I’d second what jameso says about the 7mesh resistance jackets/vests. Great in anything other than a prolonged downpour and pack very small.
Re the Berghaus, I’ve shredded both of the arms on mine on vegetation. Very light and packable, but too fragile for me to consider buying another.

On the other hand... I've literally used mine twice, because I ripped it on my first mountain bike ride, so now it's only ever used for road riding (which I never do).

That's bad luck, mine got grabbed by tress and branches in Sweden with no issues. It's a shame they don't make a slightly heavier, buy tougher version of it.
