I have just finished this book:

I really enjoyed it. It tells three stories of a race around the Western Front six months after the Armistice (no Germans allowed!) of 300km+ days, about the battles and aftermath of the war and the authors bikepacking trip around the route. He did stay in hotels and ventured off the course a few times due to motorway construction or visiting specific sites but on the other hand there was a zip tie bodge.
I have ridden in some of these areas such as Ypres and Diksmuide and have had an interest in the war since reading Seigfried Sassoon's exploits in the early '70's. About a decade ago I found out one of my grand fathers had volunteered to go to the front in 1916 and fought at Arras. Got a bit teary on occasion at the awfulness of it all and how it all happened again 20 years later.
Available on Kindle.
