One for those in the know...

Post by Scattamah »

As some of you know I like my Nanos. Many here talk of good experience on Riddlers, which I haven't tried.

Q: To those of you that have tried both Riddlers and Nanos...what's the better roller on hardpack/tarmac?

Answers on a postcard.

Can't comment on nanos Scott but the Riddler's on my cdf roll grand start to loose any traction in the slightest gloop mind had a couple of sideways slides on the way to and from work ,but you don't have to worry about the gloop

I've got both, (Riddlers 700c45's) and to be honest they are both excellent and have surprisingly similar performance, if you take into account the different volumes. The riddlers have significantly higher volume and hence I run a little softer than Nano's, this means they won't fit a lot a CX frames (Nano's were a squeeze on old CX frame!). Rolling resistance similar, grip in the mud similar (and surprisingly good), but the bigger volume does make them more comfortable on rocky stuff. If they'll fit, I'd go for the 45c Riddlers.

I think Scott is running a 2.1 Nano, assuming he's comparing against the MTB version of the riddler - although I suspect the 40c nano and 45c riddler is a similar comparison

That's right Ben - the 2.1" Nano. Essentially...I'm looking to turn Lois into a commuter for the time being...sacrilege I know. Looking for fast tyres and most likely a 36t ring on the front. Rims are 29" Bonty Mustang on the front and 29" DT Swiss X392 out back. Pretty much ready to shoe 'er with anything that will decrease rolling resistance but allow me stay tubeless. Commute of 2hrs with 32t + Ikons isn't quick enough. Need to slash 45 minutes off it to be effective.

I know you like WTB Scott but Maxxis Refuse are a quick tyre for that kind of thing.

Hey scott, I've been running 29x2.25 riddlers this year and really like them. However if i wasn't taking them off road I would be looking at something like Schwalbe G-ones or those maxxis that stu mentioned.

Hi Scott, long time lover of both tyres. But Nanos are still my go to.

That was the Nine Line, Dave...which are hit and miss but a good tyre when they work.

Thanks for the answers folks...time to get some fresh rubber, ring and chain and get back out there.

36t ring and less rolling resistance and i think i can squeeze another 5-10kph outta Lois. Would get me up from 20-25 to 30kph avg. That would be enough to start.
