There's a new video on bikepacking.com - one of a group of riders in the Cairngorms. It's not quite bikepacking given they stay at Mar Lodge, but that's not the issue I have with it. It seems that the whole video has had some sort of grey/grainy filter applied. It makes all the colours seem very washed out. I guess it's been done to add atmosphere but it just seems so unrealistic.

Anyway - still worth watching...

looks pretty realistic to me. I prefer it to the HDR superboost max (TM) filters that get applied to a lot of stuff.

It has been spinsored by Shand and Straight Cut and has Lee Craigie in it... pretty cool(ish) if you ask me. Bit short!!

I thought Scotland was grey by default.

It does look like the sun didn't shine much while they were there, but even then they might have graded it for grimness.
Dull colours are achingly hip these days it must be said, goes along with the 'folksiness' and desire for 'realness' that seems to be a thing these days.

I think I share your pain, generally.

Looks good to me. I am looking forward to my holiday there in May...

Mind you, last time I went, i thought riding the Lairg Ghru was a good idea...

Oh, I feel like I'm getting picked on now for my liking of taking B&W piccies ... in my defence, I'm very (and oddly) colour blind and don't really 'do' colour like most folk.

Looked fine to me. Beauty in the eye of the beholder and art is purely subjective and all that.

I liked it, thought it added some atmosphere.

Must admit I’m guilty of tweaking photos, on a dull day I’ll no doubt turn my photo into B+W and increase the contrast to add extra murk, whilst on a sunny day, I’ll add a little bit of brightness to make it look sunnier.

Guess I edit the photo to suit the mood I was in whilst taking the photo. All tells part of the story

Nice film. I like the 'interpreted' sort of style where some of the filming gets a bit abstract or tries to get across the conditions, etc.

Love that pic JamesO, particularly loving the headwear, white socks (how are they still white?) and especially that his front bag is a sack.

Can't say I noticed it that much. I liked the film. I did think the snow falling and sparks in the flames looked a bit fake or an effect, but didn't impact my enjoyment. I wouldn't say washed out colours and graininess is 'on trend' [a phrase increasingly at odds with itself], it just lends itself to certain applications and contexts.

I liked the 'moody' feel to it. Shame they poshed it up by staying in a swanky place mind, might have looked better staying in a bothy.

Swanky's great, get the scotch out and relax in the warm : ) Reminded me of our Arkose sleeper train trip to Scotland trip actually. Similar film made from it, we stayed in hostels rather than bivies, etc.

Just thinking about this and while I enjoyed the film well enough, I can see where Colin's coming from as I feel exactly the same about the TV programme 'Hinterland'. It too is shot in a way that not only makes all of mid-Wales look grubby and rather bleak but also portrays everyone here as only ever wearing a dirty hi-viv jacket over a tartan shirt, eating roadkill and living in what looks worse than the worse bothy I've ever not slept in.

That maybe helps explain part of my feelings. Is it because I'm familiar with the area, and what it really looks like, just as you are with that part of Wales.

It's a shame if it's been done just to make it look more grim than it actually was. None of those riders need the added ego stroking.
