Post by Mike »

So in the light of our misfortune I seriously think I should get bike insurance.. any recommendations for a good one. I wouldn't have a clue where to start as iv never felt the need to have it before :0(

Adding with house contents insurance is almost always the cheapest way. You usually need to specify the bikes (amount, make and model etc).

Pedalcover used to get a good rep (insuring with AXA) but they couldn't get a great price for me. I've also been with direct line and Aviva who seem to have good cover. Luckily so far I haven't had to claim so don't know what the most important bit is like!

Mine are one the house insurance too. Had to claim once maybe 20 years back! They paid for the stock bike, but not my upgrades to it, so maybe bear that in mind.

I do keep thinking about 3rd party family bike insurance though, largely in case my son accidentally rakes someone's car, though I could obviously have an incident too.

Ours are through https://pedalcover.co.uk/. Specialist household insurance with 15k bike cover built in. small specialist broker, phone them, speak to actual people who are friendly and knowledgeable. 0800 121 4424

The policy was slighty cheaper than our existing cover with much higher contents cover and the bike stuff too!

No links to them other than as a satisfied customer

+1 for pedalcover. Happily yet to make a claim, but seem decent and cheaper than alternatives. Also provide insurance that covers excesses on their and other policies, eg car insurance, which is included and a great idea.

Check wiggle for insurance. They're pretty decent. Sorry to hear the crap news.

There’s also Bikmo and Pedalsure.

Call up local bike shops as more often than not, they’ll have a discount code for the above

I looked into it a few years ago and was told that the premium would be 10% of the full cost of each bike per year.

As I own anywhere between 7-12 at any one time it was going to end costing me the price of one new bike per year to insure them all.

So unless I was planning on having an average of one bike stolen each year I figured I was better of spending that money on actual new bikes and kit :-bd

It's bullsh1t that we even need to be thinking about this as surely it's not too much to ask to not have our stuff knicked???

Sorry for the loss dude!!!

TSB costs me about £40 a year, you tell them the value of your most expensive bike (in my case around £1500) and they cover it and all your other bikes.
Also includes worldwide cover, and public liability.

Worth having a look at Laka? They operate differently to many insurance companies, and will pay new cost of bike even if a few years old, and premiums can be as little as zero each month.
