Rear QR Skewer

Post by PaulB2 »

Since I managed to bend my rear skewer like it was made of cheese while fitting my kid trailer to my Arkose, does anyone have any recommendations for a steel skewer before I spring for a Hope one? The steel one I have is for a 130mm hub not a 135.

Cheap and cheerful Shimano tend to be very tough.

Agreed, never had a problem with them in 25 years cycling: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/hub-spares/ ... ack-135mm/

Go Shimano

The Hope ones are made of cheese, and the cam will wear out making them useless fairly quickly

I have a Allen keyed one on my Solaris that pulled my trailer great

Mind you, my QR one on my Arkose also pulled my trailer fine

Then sold the trailer, now have another child on the way, need to get another trailer...!

I had problems with the Hope QR cam being scored and losing its grip - Changed to Shimano and never had a problem

I think it was mostly user error - I don't think I tightened it up quite enough and then while I was fetching the child out of the house a big gust of wind blew the bike and the bin it had been leaning against over resulting in scratches down one side of the bike, a bent skewer and the wheel pulled out of the drop outs.

Ooops. I was going up a little slope, short and sharp section that had a rock in the wrong place. I stood up to pedal over it and there was a pretty unpleasant noise

Wheel had pulled out the drop out. But thankfully haven't released the trailer! Managed to fix it before getting a telling off for being irresponsible!

I've never had a problem with Hope's. I've had one set at least 15years on a regularly used bike. Just got a set SH to use on the Fargo build which are a different design. Wonder if it's new Hope's that are cheesy?

Shimano xt, tried a few in the rohloff/ecr. Both DT Swiss and hope failed to do the job, XT just worked and never moved :-bd

The rear skewer from a turbo trainer is designed to bear weight on it. Very sturdy.
