Things that make you sad.

Whilst out on the bike today I got thinking about random stuff, one of which was stuff that makes people sad.....(depressing thread subject I guess)

A couple of weeks ago I found a dead robin in the garage. It had clearly died of starvation or shock or something as there was lots of bird poo around. It must have got in when I was working in there and then I locked it in, probably just before I had a week off the bike so didn't go in for a week.

Made me feel really bad did that. :|

Robins? Nasty, vicious, bullying, territorial little birds not averse to killing their own. Suck up to humans and follow them around in the garden, being all best-buddy; looking all pretty on xmas cards. Horrible little two-faced things.

Does that make you feel any better?!?

 Oops, should have added an emoji

Animal related things in general for me too Steve, especially when I see something's died and there was no need.

I'm probably not so arsed about people but it does make me sad when I see opportunity wasted, not through lack of vision or imagination but plain laziness. Ooh and it makes me sad when people who have more than they could ever need moan about not having enough while walking blindly by those who have nowt.

^ yes... that bit about those that have nowt. Homelessness. Always gets me, and while accepting there are reasons for it in many cases, our society making the way back from that situation so difficult is shameful.

I won't tell you about the mouse traps in the garage then.

I've no problems with that. I was really meaning, when things die through neglect or ill treatment.

Mrs Mac's dad died when she was quite young - There has been a gap in the family history about him during the years of the Second World War. Daughter has been spending a lot of time trying to find out where he was - She found out this week that he was an Auschwitz survivor - Even though he has been dead for years, that made us quite sad.

Literally anything with kids getting badly treating. Makes me want to blub. All my charitable doings go to Unicef.

Quite fancy volunteering if I ever get out the rat race.

Edit: actually do blub a fair bit....

cars/motorised vehicles.
i try to cycle everywhere, and if i cant i use a bus.
i find it so sad that in a country so small that the car has become king. and that people are prepared to sit waiting in lines of traffic every morning and evening.
most of the time, the reason being nothing but pig headedness. the answer i get fro 3 work mates is, 'i work hard to pay for my car, so it is my right to use it'.
this kind off attitude depresses the sub standard out of me.

The fact that now, 15years since he died, I’m beginning to forget the sound of my Dads voice.

The fact that very few people care how many veterans kill themselves every year, but millions is spunked on 1 tower block.

The fact that thousands of children go missing every year, and yet somehow, one child’s family gets millions thrown at them to search for her.

The fact that mental health is still a taboo subject.

I must admit i don't tend to be the sentimental type when it comes to animals, but when i used to commute regularly to work by bike, i used to see the same barn owl about 5am, he would follow me and always break off about the same field boundary and turn back. Saddened me then to find it dead in the road last year, weird really as Norfolk is littered with road-kill, but i think it was nice to see something each morning like that.

At the moment it is book I recently finished and the one I am reading now. The first was Hugo Sebag-Montefiore's history of the battle of the Somme. A lot of letters and diary entries of soldiers who fought along side regimental entries. Brought a tear to my eyes a few times. My maternal grandfather volunteered for the British army about six weeks before the battle started but did not arrive in France until later. I wonder what he must have thought during training.

My current book is McAlpine's Men by Ultan Cowley about the many Irish men who came here between the 20's and the 80's. My father and his brother came over in the 50's to meet an elder brother who was already here. It was a tough life. It seems that those who fared best were the ones who were employed by English (also Danish in my dad's case) companies such as McAlpines, Wimpey and Beirrum's. Those working as subbies for often Irish emigrant companies on the LUMP paid no tax and have no pension and live in destitution - assuming they survived. My dad was very angry about it. He died on 31st July and I never got to talk to him about the book. The older brother died young (just 51) and his wife died last night. My dad often would come home saying somebody had died and it really hit home when the next door neighbour (also Irish) was killed leaving a wife and 5 children after an accident on a power station. Dad had asbestosis / copd and that was not unusual in his generation. H&S was virtually non existent in those days.

This makes me sad. Of all the things we've created as a race the Pork Scratching was surely destined to only ever be sold from behind the bars of Midlands pubs.
But no. Maple flavour? Sea Salt? Cracked black pepper? Just wrong!

For me, its been today after finding out a local lad who drank in my local took his own life last night. Something to do with not seeing his kid. Just a waste. So sad knowing his kid will end up being affected for his entire life.

As they say, 'its good to talk'
