Where do you pack your tent?

Post by benp1 »

Those of you that use a proper tent, where do you pack it?

By proper tent I mean a double skin shelter using proprietary poles or similar

The only tent I'd use for bikepacking (at the moment) is a Tarptent Scarp 1. I could carry the pole in my half framebag but the little poles that give the ends support mean the inner/outer it doesn't pack down very well, it doesn't 'scrunch', so I'd have to use a bar bag.

Problem is that I haven't used my bar bag in a good few trips now, I've been using a pack. I realise that I could put my tent in my pack but it's not a very big pack and wouldn't fit, which would mean using a different pack etc

I'm planning/hypothesising here, my last few trips have been bivy only with a small tarp in my pack just in case, so interested in what other users do

In my gorilla cage for it weighs next to nothing and packs very small- i have an inner and an outer
tent poles in the seat post - they can rattle a bit [ descents in particular] even when i have tried to wrap them to prevent this

the 4 man gets strapped to the top tube - weight of this is 1.5kg but its bulky despite being lightweight- pole in the seatpost again

We've a Big Agnes Copper Spur 2 man tent https://www.ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk ... tent-p6728. I started a thread about lightweight tents a few months ago which might be worth searching out.

When we take it bikebacking we split it between us: outer and poles; groundsheet, inner and pegs. The split gives each of us roughly half the weight of the tent - it only weighs 1570g! The fabric bits get packed in whatever's deemed the "wet" bag, this last weekend I had the outer in the seat bag. The poles are tricky as the main frame is shock-corded as one. Some of the poles are pre-bent plus the point in the centre* is a spider. This means that they are a bit bulkier than you'd expect when folded. The folded poles with spider are 500mm long so a bit much for most frame bags - I carry them tucked in behind the bag in the handlebar harness.

* It's not the exact centre, more the point where two separate poles would cross.
Better weight than wisdom, a traveller cannot carry

Asposium ... liking your set up I clicked on the pic and scrolled through a few of your others, then came across something disturbing. I zoomed in .... not sure if this has seen the light of day before.
