Nope, not needed in my experience*.

No, not on my 'cross, hardtail or hybrid commuter

Since the advent of narrow/wide chainrings, clutch rear derailleurs and later and especially Eagle drivetrains I've not used nor needed one.

In very rough situations I very rarely (like 4 x a year) notice kind of a chain slip on the Eagle system, something I can only provoke with my 160 mm 29" full sus though. I simply can't ride fast enough in rough stuff on my other bikes to get this.

Before I started riding with Eagle drivetrains though, I'd rarely get chain drops. A few times a year only. Those rare occasions didn't suffice to justify a chain guide.

I use something like that by Paul Components on a Rohloff bike that uses s chain tensioner rather than an adjustable system.
I used to drop the chain a few times a year. Now I don't. They're cheap and light and work.

Full on DH style riding maybe... not for your average bit of trail though.

I've yet to drop a chain when using a Narrow-Wide chainring either with or without a clutch mech. That includes some Alpine descents and following rather rapid folk down rocky trails. Nearly all of the distance has been on hardtails or rigids with only a little on FS so I can't comment too well on that score but if Gian states he rarely drops a chain doing the rides he does then I doubt it's much of an issue in the real world.

Just fitted one of them to a drive train that wouldn't behave on a gravel bike. Not a n/w chain ring but the chain guide was the cheaper option!

I may fit one in the future as a dropped chain (on an alfine setup ffs) caused me a nasty accident requiring surgery this time last year. But now I feel there's less need to rush
