Dave's started  That's going to reduce the volume of work I get done over the next days as I'll be dot watching. The forecast isn't great with weather warnings for 65mph winds tomorrow, but it is from the south to south-west so a 65mph tail wind for the outward leg

He's above the area covered by the Amber warning so won't be too bad.....
Interestingly the wind is to switch to the north west on Saturday eve so he may be lucky!

I was in Perthshire today. There is a significant volume of water flowing down those rivers. Enough to make me reconsider a Fri/Sat bivvy plan given there's more on the way.

Fuckthis route. On the last climb of the day my rear mech inexplicably went into the spokes. One snapped and now the rim is pissed. The rear mech is fecked as well. I’m in a pub in fort Augustus getting pissed as it looks like a trip to Fort William tomorrow. I’m especially pissed off as conditions were terrible and I was dead proud to be on for a pizza. Really really really really hacked off as my itt is finished.

Scotroutes. I had several marginal crossings on the way to loch Lyon. The one at the top of the loch took a lot of umming to do. It was nearly waist deep. Everywhere was flowing with water.

That Loch Lyon section was in my planned route  I was actually surprised when I looked at your tracker and saw you'd made it through. I suspect the Enrick might have been an issue too.

Now looking at a loop involving the south end of Loch Ericht and over the Bealach Dubh. I expect it to be boggy!!!

Sorry to hear that Dave. The Highland Trail really does seem as though it dislikes you more than most.

I'm sure the swearing paractice will come in most useful for the BB300, so not a total loss.

Dave, don't ditch it. Get the bike fixed and carry on. Either get a friendly bike shop to bring you the parts and tools, or get back to Laggan

You said you had 2 weeks to do it. A day out will help avoid some of the weather, and you can either restart from Tyndrum or FA.

Don't waste your holiday!!!

Steve's right - an unfortunate setback but not a show stopper?

Steve +1. Somebody put him back on his bike.

After today's weather has passed through it doesn't look too bad for the remainder of the forecast period.

Stick with it Dave - Its only a glitch, a temporary set back to the main aim
Still time to do this (and avoid todays weather)

Thank you all for the massive encouragement.

Now feck off the lot of you.

Ive just ridden to Fort William in the worst conditions I’ve ever experienced. Winds are horrendous and rain so heavy it feels like hail. On the way I thought about all that water and mulled over how hard the day before had been riding through it. So I’m being soft. Instead of spunking cash on a new wheel and mech I’ve booked a train home. It’s not giving up it’s a temporary setback. Remember I hold a near unbreakable record for the number of fails on this route so I’ll undoubtedly be back. My bad luck is never getting the heatwave on the times I can do this route. One day I will. I took some video along the way but sadly did not have the camera on when I screamed at my bike at the top of the Corriarick Pass. That would have been worth watching. I even looked around for a branch to beat it Basil Fawlty style.

This is meant to be my holiday as well. I’m supposed to be destressing after months of late nights running my own business. So next week will be some pleasant rides to tea shops and cider mills.

Love you all

Weather has certainly been biblical these past 24 hours. We had waves crashing across the window last night and I live 50 miles from the nearest shoreline!!

Due to get bad again at the weekend after a brief respite too.

FWIW I think it's a sensible move. :-bd

PS - the train line from Inverness to Perth has been blocked in two places today. I hope the Fort William train is running OK!!

Sounds like the right decision. Riding in rain and wind is one thing but having to cross fast flowing and deep rivers in remote locations is another thing altogether.

Fair enough Dave! One day you'll get those fabled conditions with dry trails, no midges and warm breezes.
