Front ring recommendations, please.

Post by Cheeky Monkey »

Building something up with 11 spd and single front ring. XT mech, shifter and cassette and some Middleburn RS7 cranks. Was going to go for an AbsoluteBlack oval in the low 30s (on the one hand it's for the boy and he's lazy, on the other I might "borrow" it and am a "spinner" rather than a "grinder" when it comes to hills - will not be mashing big gears ).

Anyhoo - looks like £50 plus with some chain bolts from AB. Would anybody care to recommend something else and a bit less spendy. Doesn't have to be an oval ring.

AB ones are very beautifully made. Worth the cash.

A quick search shows up Tredz doing Gamut 32t for a reasonable price.

Isn't there something peculiar about those? Vague recollection of stories on the internet. Usually wouldn't care much but it's on-one gear, and I've had experience of the good and bad examples.

Damn fine price though.

I've used those SS rings before Tim and nowt bad to report. Obviously, not thick / thin profile though.

But it's just a chain ring. I can't see, particularly given the other more affordable / cheaper examples, that they can be worth it.

Hey ho. Reckon either one each of the OO SS ones or me be a workscomponents.

Thanks all for the suggestions

So far it's wearing really well and it does look pretty, shallow I know but I do like a bit of subtle bling on my bikes!

Surely it has to be Middleburn rings on Middleburn cranks.
Both my main bikes have got RS7 square taper cranks and Hardcoat rings.
34t on the Krampus and 46t on the Vapour. Both paired with Rohloff out back.
If you are going through hell, keep going.

I thought Middleburn had gone pop but of course BETD took the brand on. However (if no-ones guessed yet) I'm being tight so their rings are falling into the same range as AB's.

To add to the craziness I was rooting in boxes last night and turned up a BNIB Hope 34T ring. Result! (and slight )

So thank you again for all the help (particularly the Superstar code as it's saved a few quid on the chainring bolts) and I will no doubt be buying a ring at some point when I discover the 34T makes me / my knees quit on the hills and I grind to a halt

Middleburn have indeed popped. No new production from new owners yet but plenty of rings still for sale, especially on SJS website.
I bought a bunch a while back cause I'm still using 5arm 110bcd on my MTB and don't think the cranks will ever die.

AB are nice, expensive, but last for a long time SS.
Workscomp. are also fine, last a bit less long.
Superstar, work, flex a bit, cheap.
Blackspire, work well, but heavy ish.

Currently riding AB on SS, Blackspire on full sus XC, Works on other full sus, Superstar on CX/Gravel/Commute bike. Can't remember what is on the Cutty, possibly AB?

Superstar SS rear sprockets are utter turds - flex a lot.
