Whats in your first aid kit?

Post by BobCatMax »

Of the back of the tool kit thread, I thought I'd ask. Mine tends to err on the pessimistic side but I'd like to know what everyone else packs...

Few antiseptic wipes, some plasters, a dressing (actually must replace that after my mate wiped out on the WHW), strip of neurofen.

duct tape (from tool kit) use with dressing for bigger wound
spare tube (from tool kit) makes a usable sling

Salbutamol inhaler, like the pros

Wouldn't know what to do with anything else anyway

A point I've made in the past. Unless you are diabetic, suffer from anaphylactic shock or similar then once past cuts and grazes there's not a great deal most can do. If you or someone you come across has broken a leg or something equally serious once you've got the casualty out of any immediate danger and made them comfortable there's not a lot you can do even with the larger commercial FAKs. Certainly not anything you'd likely be carrying when biking.

I'd add some large safety pins to your kit - you can make a sling from a shirt or other bit of clothing. The inner tube idea is good.

I've had to make an inner tube sling before, it works pretty well but it's a bit sproingy to be perfect. Does the job though.

Mine is pretty basic - dressings and wipes pretty much. I usually carry an emergency blanket too; not sure of the use when I've got sleeping kit with me, but it's a lot easier to reach then unpacking a sleeping bag.

Small plasters, 5x8cm mepore, steristrips, sterile wipes, super-glue, safety pins (mainly for digging out splinters).

Something I have never packed...

One thing I do always bring since BB200 2014 is painkillers. Decent paracetamol/codeine mix and also Ibuprofen.

I hurt my knee that year (and got my soul crushed) and probably would not have been able to finish had a very kind fellow participant not offered me some painkillers.

It got me through the ride. So now I always bring enough for me and usually enough to share out too, should the need arise.

Every day is a school day.

To the items mentioned I'd add tick tweezers and some Imodium tablets.

Safety pins
Tick removers (2 sizes)
Micropore tape, flattened
Tablets - paracetamol, ibuprofen, anti diarrhoea, anti allergy
Dental floss and stout needle - mainly as a repair kit, not for sewing people up

Here's mine from a previous discussion.

Only stuff to sort out things that are irritating or a nuisance really, tick tweezers, pain killers and gel, some bits for cleaning and dressing minor wounds. The thing that looks like a small gun is one of these

http://www.lessmosquito.com/online-shop ... -ease.html

It's like a mini piezo ignitor, the small electric shock reduces histamine production and stops the itching. The wife got it in a supermarket. I was skeptical but it actually works. I usually have some anti-histamine tablets as well, need to replace those as the wife took them.

If I had a more serious injury I'd improvise and abandon the ride, this kit is only for things that would irritate during the ride.

To this I added imodium for the HT550. As it happens none of it was any use when I met Mike with his cut toe he couldn't stop bleeding. But as A & E only glued it up and that fell off anyway I guess nothing would of helped. He improvised by tying a sock round the toe and jambing it in his shoe as a compress and that stopped it bleeding which also illustrates that knowledge is the most important thing to take.

And if you listen really carefully you can hear a little red light flashing inside GCHQ alerting them to the potential risk to public safety posed by someone called “RIP”...

 . By some strange coincidence, totally within reach of me right now is - a shovel!! Might this be related to the fact that BigDummySteve and myself are currently BaMing in a Peakland graveyard?

It"s like Cluedo: done in the graveyard by RIP with a shovel......
