Replacing a Bonty Mustang rear wheel

Post by Scattamah »

Could do with some advice here folks...

Tonight I've discovered a pin prick hole in the rear rim wall letting sealant through. Now the stupid in me says keep riding it. The less stupid part says it could become a liability if it disintegrates whilst I'm cavorting through mid Wales next month. So a couple of questions for those of you more in the know than me, which is probably most of you - as I just ride the things...

Reusing hubs - not an issue or am I looking at replacing the whole shebang?
If I can reuse the hubs...Bonty 28 hole Mustang 29er rims - will these be buggers to source?
Alternatives to the Mustangs that won't totally cripple me financially?

I'm open to suggestions here...need to get it sorted pronto.

Is the hole at the joint in the rim? Are they pinned or welded?

Use wider rim tape.

I have Pacenti rims on a couple of bikes - like muchly.

Although, I'm as stupid as the next man, so I'd just keep riding on it.

Thanks for the responses folks. WTB tyres go up on the Pacenti easily? They've always been a bit of a fight on the Mustangs.

I'd have binned the Bonty rims at point of sale... but I know they have served you well.

Depending on where the hole is you could just put a spot of super glue or similar.

The question is is this the start of a general giving up of the rim material. You've put them through a lot and general fatigue does occur.

If you get another rim you may need to think about spoke lengths and build costs.

I know.... no help whatsoever huh.

I'd shy away from 28 hole on a loaded HT too.... just to be even less help.

What axle.... I might have something kicking.

If you go down the complete new wheel route, i may have a pair of new Easton Arc27 rims to sell if you're interested Scott.
32 hole though..

@ MBNut - bog standard QR as far as I know. Not being technical in these things 'n all. The wheels have been amazing for a stock factory set...20K Kms+ and this is the first issue I've had. Sometimes you get lucky I guess. Metal fatigue is indeed the worry playing on my mind just now...I don't fancy diving downhill at what you call 'banzai' speed on a disintegrating wheel. Bigger-than-Spain descents coming up next month.

Cheers for the offer Jase. Will keep this in mind. About to see what my mechanic has to say.

@Chris - sorry I missed this...I don't exactly know...I just ride 'em :) But your question prompted me to look for a weld join...and I've found another area of the rim where a decal is that has a bubble of sealant under it too. So thankyou for making me look further.

@Jase - my mechanic has said he'll reuse my hubs so I'll be sticking with 28's. But thank you all the same. Appreciated.

Looks like it's all in hand now. Thanks everyone for stopping by with advice.

If it's only leaking at the join then wider rim tape is probably the answer. Too many folk are ignoring manufacturers recommendations and using tubeless rim tape that is too narrow for the rim.

Ta for that. I'll make sure to double check with my mechanic on Monday as that's a helluva lot cheaper solution.
