What are my options?

This is my bike,

https://www.cyclesolutions.co.uk/p11372 ... -road-bike

And I love it. It just fits and it's comfy. The gearing is ok....I can spin up most things but I know it's going to be hard on longer rougher climbs. On my road bike I've changed the cassette to give me more but I can't find an 8 speed cassette with a bigger climbing gear. Do I have any options out there I've not found or is it time to man up!??

Cheers,

Dave

The cheapest (but not necessarily cheap) option would be to move to a 10spd rear derailleur, you'd need cassette, derailleur, chain, shifter and for completeness new cable and outer.

I'm not sure if there is a Claris 10spd so depending on what the shifter looks like you might need to get the pair so they match. Just checked ChainReaction and Claris seems to be 8spd only so you'd have to move up to Tiagra - a full groupset here starts at £250 but just cassette, derailleur, shifters and chain are £160 or so.

If it's 8 speed wouldn't the cheapest option be an Alivio rear derailleur and an 8 speed MTB cassette? Sunrace do an 11-40 one. Plus a new chain. Obviously bigger gaps than the road setup, but I've done basically the same on my bike with Sora/Deore 9spd.

What’s the smallest chainring you can fit? Spec says it’s got a 32T inner, you might be able to go smaller.

Thanks folks. The cassette ticks the boxes! The inner ring is riveted on, no ready swap.

I'm tracking down a supplier now that will post to Scotland.

Cheers.

I've not found a UK supplier for the CSM680 11-40t 8spd cassette. I've emailed the manufacturer and tried an Irish seller who won't post to Highlands. Has anyone spotted a seller?

Ta.

I know that 18 bike in Hope deall with Sunrace. They are super-helpful, worth a call, but closed wednesday

You'll find Si is quite response on twitter though @18bikes

maybe need a goat link as well to position the rear mech for the larger cassette? They have those too

Very doubtful that you'll get stung for duty from China.

Just found this reply in email so going further afield to purchase necessary.

Hi David,

That cassette is not in our European program due to limited rear derailleur compatibility.

Kind regards,

I bought one of these. Delivered this week and looks decent quality. Just waiting for the road link to fit it.
