Hoping to do a few events where i'd actually like to have a few decent photos to remember them by this year, have always used my iphone 5 for pics, but i don't know if it is me or the phone, but i just get a load of dull, washed out photos.

Any recommendations for a small point and shoot camera that can be operated by a luddite?

Not a direct answer to the question but have you tried a camera app on your phone? I use 645 Camera Pro on my touch and although I have a decent camera, I very rarely feel the need to take it now.

Something from the Panasonic Lumix range.

I'm selling a Lumix TZ10 which I'm not using ATM. Great little camera but I've just bought a s/h Canon G9 which I prefer.

If the new lumixes (lumii? lumice?) are up to parr with the one I've had since 2012 I'll echo that. They're never going to handle low light and movement like a big camera but I take lot more photos than I otherwise would because I can keep it in my pocket

Surprisingly good

I use a Sony compact that I can't remember the model and a GoPro Hero 5. The GoPro is surprisingly good as a stills camera. None of the old pin cushion photos the old used to take, I've got it set up so it goes straight to still photos when it's switched on. It's dead easy to switch between stills, video and time lapse. You can leave it switched on and shout at it to take a photo if it's mounted on a helmet or bars although the voice recognition isn't 100% for me, might be the London accent.

Following the failure of my Canon G11, I'm currently using Cath's Lumix - can't remember which model but it's one of the more compact ones. Image wise it's not bad but in operation it's very slow: it takes several seconds from pressing the power button to be "picture ready", the autofocus is slow and if your subject is moving towards you or away then you have to prefocus on the point where you want them to be in the shot, the camera can't keep up otherwise. Once you've taken a shot it then takes several seconds for the image to be saved to the memory card before you can take another. IMO it's definitely worth paying more to get something more responsive.

FWIW my current one is a TZ40 and doesn't exhibit any of those traits.

Ah..

I only upgraded to the TZ40 as it has the built-in GPS. That makes it handy for doing path surveys and the like, especially if I'm photographing gates and stiles etc.

Sony rx100 and a pelican case. The sensor is 4 x bigger than anything else in it's category. Just talked my dad into one for their trip to New Zealand.

The best camera is the one you have with you.

I have an RX100. its great but more often than not I don't have it with me. 90% of the photos I take are on my phone.

Get a newer smartphone.

I took out my compact the other day and the delay in it being ready to use, and ready to share, and then transfer the images meant i can't be bothered anymore. I'm not even sure the pics are as good as my Galaxy S7!

The google pixel phone includes unlimited cloud back up of photos you take with it and they look pretty impressive considering.

Have a competent but unused compact water/shockproof camera gathering dust as the ease and capability of my iPhone cameras have never ceased to amaze. I’m sure other modern smartphones are just as good. I pretend the old camera will come in useful if I get back into kayaking, but now phones are also waterproof...
The girl’s Nikon Dig SLR also sat in a drawer as it’s just so inconvenient.
Be amazed if I ever buy another camera.

Depends what phone, iPhone you just turn on the phone, swipe left with your nose and then press volume+and on button together. Simples!!
