How many and what bikes?

Post by gairym »

So.....following on from Ton's declaration of owning a 'crap load' of bikes on the 'Bike lust' thread it got me thinking about all the bikes I've owned.

I then put together a list and thought it might make for interesting (read: sad and pathetic) reading to see who's owned what, when and why etc...

So come on, let's see your bicycle history list.....

To kick things off, here's mine:

1. Giant 'ATX 760'
2. Marin 'Quake 5'
3. Marin 'Rift Zone'
4. Marin 'Mount Vision' (stolen)
5. Marin 'Mount Vision'
6. Kona 'Lavadome' (stolen)
7. On-one 'Inbred'
8. On-one 'Inbred SS'
9. On-one 'Inbred 853'
10. Kona 'Explosif'
11. Cotic 'Soul'
12. Planet X 'Kaffenback'
13. Surly 'Karate Monkey'
14. Cotic 'Solaris mk1'
15. Planet X ' Super Pro Carbon SL'
16. Salsa 'Mukuk'
17.Santa Cruz 'Blur LT'
18. Travers 'Bat Fastard'
19. Dave Marsh 'unknown late 80s road bike'
20. On-one 'Lurcher'
21. Singular 'Rooster'
22. Cotic 'Escapade'
23. Cotic 'Solaris mk2'

I've ridden a whole plethora more via various tests and reviews but to be honest I'm a little surprised by how low my total is!

Edit: just realised that doesn't include bmx's (of which there have been many). Or the numerous Raleigh 'Choppers' I restored and sold for a while. Or the 5-6 bikes I owned as a child. Or the three retro road bikes currently in the garage that I got cheap and haven't decided what to do with yet - doh!

3. Orange X1 (shock popped, replaced by alu bar!)
4. Identity jump bike (stolen)
5. Diamondback Mojito (stolen)
6. Genesis Longitude
7. Specialized rockhopper (current hack/commuter)

Bikes 2-4 did a bit of everything, including off road touring with panniers to the odd DH race :)
Anyone had more bikes stolen?

From go to whoa...

Dunlop Dart - first bike, aged 3. Parents ran over in it after I left it on the driveway. Didn't ride so well after that.
Unknown brand dragster with banana seat and 3 speed transmission. Rode it to death. First long distance trips.
Unknown brand (might have been Malvern Star) BMX with Tuff2's. Rode it to death.
More expensive but forgotten branded (maybe a Haro?) BMX. Stolen :(
Cheap unknown brand 10 speed. Rode it to death.
More expensive 10 speed - no branding - Reynolds 531 frame on Velocity Aeroheads and Shimmy 105 + Biopace. Rode it hard and didn't kill it!
Cadex CFM3. Still own it after 20 years and 30,000+Kms.
Trek Superfly AL elite 2013. Love my Lois.

Oh dear, normally I think it best not to think about these things. But this is as close as I can remember. I'm not going to think about bikes I've test ridden or had on test for long durations.

Various kids bikes and teen bikes. Starting with "actual bikes" around 1999, so 19 years worth. Bold I still own.

Mountain Bikes:
Specialized Hardrock
Specialized Rock Hopper
Specialized Rock Hopper FSR
Specialized Stumpjumper (HT)
Specialized Stumpjumper FSR
Club Roost XC4
On-One Jackflash
On-One Inbred (26)
On-One ScandAl
On-One Inbred (again)
24/7 jump bike of some sort
Rocky Mountain RM7
Rocky Mountain RM9
Rocky Mountain Switch
Rocky Mountain Element (I still miss this bike)
Kinesis HT of some sort
Giant XTC Alu
Giant XTC carbon * 2
Giant Anthem
Kingdom Tech-9
Scott Scale
Scott Spark
Santa Cruz Bullit
Salsa Fargo
Salsa Ti Fargo
Salsa El Marachii
Salsa Spearfish * 3 (Pre and post split pivot)
Salsa Spearfish Carbon
Salsa Cutthroat

Skinny Wheel'd bikes:
Lapiere road bike of some form
Fuji Track
Dolan Kilo

Dolan DF3
Quintana Roo TT bike of some sort
Cervelo P2
Genesis Day-One
Colnago steel frame of some sort
Mango Point AR
Planet X road bike of some sort

Cross Bikes:
Alan CX bike of some sort
Flanders CX bike of some sort
Planet X Uncle John Cross
Specialized Crux
Giant CX bike
Cotic Escapade

Trials Bikes:
Planet X Zebidi
Onza T-Bird
Inspired Flow

Oddly, I've never owned a Trek, Canondale or Kona bike, ridden quite a few for work though.

There were more than I realised!
  • Raleigh Boxer (like a Grifter, but smaller)
  • Raleigh Burner BMX, modified with Tuff 2 wheels and Tange racing forks (an absolute belter of a bike)
  • Puch 10 speed steel road bike (gas pipe tubing and chromed steel rims)
  • Raleigh "Triathlon" road bike (http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewto ... 7&t=256439)
  • Harry Hall 531 frame (to replace Triathlon frame)
  • Brompton M6LX
  • Brompton SP (a factory frame, modified to take a Rohloff, V brakes and front suspension)
  • 1990s Dawes Galaxy
  • Carlton Corsair
  • Raleigh Roadster with rod and stirrup brakes (from the 1950s)
  • 1970s Dawes Galaxy, converted to a hub gear and flat bars (great commuter)
  • Thorn Nomad X Series (a tank in bike form)
  • Bob Jackson End 2 End (Reynolds 631)
  • Brompton S6, Black Edition
  • Singular Swift
  • Singular Gryphon
  • Surly Straggler
I think I'm done buying bikes for a while. I'm currently downsizing, to spend more time riding and less time with a spanner/soapy sponge in hand...

Mmmm, let's see how good my memory is. * = still have.

Very first adult size bike was a Hercules (rod brakes, I kid you not!)

Various Elswick/Raleigh/Peugeot roadbikes through the 70s/80s
On One Il Pompino ss
Litespeed Ultimate
Kona King Kapu*
Dean Torreys cx*

Peugeot ATB (first mountain bike, end of 80s)
Haro team hardtail
Litespeed Hardtail (Caratti import demo, 1" steerer)
Trek Fuel (first generation, ali frame, carbon rear triangle)
Maverick ML7
Dean Colonel ss*
Orange P7*
Independent Fabrication deluxe*
Trek 69er ss*
Kona Unit

Dawes mtb tandem

There were others that I can't recall at the moment but, all in all, over 40+ years of adult cycling that's doesn't look that many compared to some! I actually can't really remember my childhood bikes, no Chopper or anything like that.
We go out into the hills to lose ourselves, not to get lost. You are only lost if you need to be somewhere else and if you really need to be somewhere else then you're probably in the wrong place to begin with.

I showed my wife this thread to show that that I'm an amateur, I don't have too many bikes and I really don't spend that much on my hobby:

Peugeot Tour 10 (stolen)
Marin Bobcat Trail (left in Marin coincidentally)
Lemond Nevada City
Norco LRT2 (stolen)
Konnect BSO
Giant Anthem
Giant Escape
