This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike Hall
A range of distances, from 100km to 400km (and a possible 600km in the works). All in Wales & the Marches combining road and off road. 2/3 June 2018. Looks interesting, more at: http://tinat.cymru/
Re: This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike
I'm in for the 300. Planning a 2, 3, 4, 6 next year.

Looks interesting.

Definitely in for the 400. Completing my Ultra Randoneur with it would be nice.

Aye, I can feel a 400k's on the cards. Should be a good representation of 'boners' I imagine.
May the bridges you burn light your way
Re: This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike
The 400 does look appealing - as you say Stu, there could be a fair few boners riding it.
Re: This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike
I am tempted by the 300k populaire. Not sure I can fathom 400k really.
I do like the sound of the rides though. Daunting.
Definitely a challenge that appeals. Biggest stuff I have done up until now is the BB200, so a 300k seems the logical next step.
It would be interesting to do 300k on my "other" bike. I have done a couple of 160k laps of Dartmoor on it, but this is much more climbing and a greater range of surfaces...
God, it sounds like I am talking myself into it!!

Re: This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike
Would love to give the 400 a crack, but I might have to buy another bike as the MTB is probably to slow on the road and my weight-weenie road bike is definitely not going off-road... Just the excuse I need!
Re: This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike
Sounds tempting, maybe need a lot of training but may be up for a 200km. That Wales place isn't known for its flat bits!

Re the comments they make about tyres.
Is there any form of scrutineering to check tyres or are the comments merely advisory?
Or put it another way if I fetched up with my off roader shod with 29 x 2.2 BAs would I be allowed to ride?

Don't know for certain but I'd bet a tenner, that any tyre advice is simply that and you make your own decisions.Or put it another way if I fetched up with my off roader shod with 29 x 2.2 BAs would I be allowed to ride?

I'll be riding the 400 BR with Dyffers.
If it looks like the off road bits are going to be during daylight I'll probably be on 32mm tyres but I'll wait to see the full route before making a choice. Of the bits I can work out that are off road (looks like Cors Caron nature reserve, Claerwen reservoir track, NCN818 from Cwmystwyth to Llangurig and NCN 82 from Llanegryn to Arthog-ish) should be rideable with care on most 'gravel' tyres. The Vyrnwy - Carno bit I'm not so sure about but I'd guess that it'll be a route through Dyfnant Forest.

'You'd' assume that will just be the fire roads through the forest unless someone decides to include a couple of BW that lurk in there ... they'd make any gravel tyre redundantI'd guess that it'll be a route through Dyfnant Forest

Nice thing about audaxes is that the route is advisory. You can go bog trotting if you want.

Re: This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike
There is no bike (without an engine) that you will be turned away from the start on. It's your choice, and James on the website is simply giving you some info about surfaces that might influence those choices.
I'm coming from the other direction than chris at the moment; I have the perfect bike for this except it has 2.2 Ikons on it. Whilst I can almost certainly get round a ridiculously hilly 400 in 26 hours on it as it stands, I'm looking forward to the hundreds of hours agonising over whether to go narrower / lighter / slicker tyred for the majority tarmac that this route will undoubtedly be. Then probably turn up on my nearly bald Ikons anyway and get some more sewing practice (a la Gravel Dash eh chris?

I love that this has already descended into a "what tyres" thread :)
I pose the question: where is the best chippy en route?
FWIW, I'll be on the Cutty with 2.1 Nanoraptors.

200k looks nice for me. nice and steadly
Re: This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike
I'll be there.....
Can't have the #bemoreMike sticker on the new bike and not go.
As for distance, depends on how #belessPussy I'm feeling.

Re: This Is Not A Tour - new Audax events in memory of Mike
Hmm... I've never done this sort of thing, but I'm not convinced I could get through 400km with that elevation in that sort of time.
Or is that just my off road brain talking? Not that I have an appropriate bike anyway.

Interesting event, 400 for me ideally but 2018 agenda is getting seriously busy. Need to get 2018 calendar.
Why don't bearbones make one? Paper one, for the wall.

You could always ride the Populaire version - that has a minimum speed limit of 10 km/h - you've got until Sunday night to finish.Richard G wrote:Hmm... I've never done this sort of thing, but I'm not convinced I could get through 400km with that elevation in that sort of time.
