+1 for Spokesman, especially if you are in the South-West.
JRA also VG service.
Not such good results from Strada Wheels.

Re: wheel builder recommendations
Someone trusted local to you.
Failing that, mail order.
If anyone says, or suggests bringing your wheels back after a few rides to be trued up then run.
Wheels should leave the shop ready to ride.
All my wheels are built by big Matt at 18 bikes in hope. He's made 1000's of wheels (yes, thousands) all are pre loaded and tensioned by hand. So much so that he's had operations for carpal tunnel syndrome.
I have a set of wheels he made that have covered at least 20,000km, mainly off road on a rigid bike. They have never needed any truing. As solid now as when they left the stand.
They will be wheel builders around that can do this but be sure before you hand over the order.

Re: wheel builder recommendations
some local opinion, I've had really great wheels from ken ellekers in the past (10ish years ago). not sure what they're like now.Asposium wrote:looking to get a new pair of wheels for the sequoia.

cliff pratt's avoid like the plague.
an old feller who i work with swears by cottingham cycle centre, he's had all his wheels built by them and is picky owd sort.
Re: wheel builder recommendations
I have also used actionsports.de for a new build with everything supplied by them for DT Swiss hubs rims et al.
Before the pound went tu against the euro this was a really cheap option.
Very quick build time, quality, and delivery less than uk charges.
Wheels all pre stressed and never had a problem.

Having just ordered a set of boost 29er wheels form 18 Bikes, this is good to know....All my wheels are built by big Matt at 18 bikes in hope. He's made 1000's of wheels (yes, thousands) all are pre loaded and tensioned by hand. So much so that he's had operations for carpal tunnel syndrome.

As Colin says DIY is a valid option. Get Roger Musson's e-book and set a couple of evenings aside. Wheel building's one of those things that looks like a black art but in reality it's following a formula/recipe and not rushing.

The Velosmith is pretty sh*t hot down in Plymouth. Anyone down that way, his work is all top-notch.
