A new event - possibly.

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

Caveat - This is whirling around in my head but could come to nothing. The reason for posting is to see whether there's any spark of interest out there. If there is, I'll pursue it, if not, I'll focus my energies on something else. It's certainly a deviation from the norm but I personally think there may be enough 'cross-over' that it might find a home at Bear Bones ... what with the increasing interest in gravel / adventure / whatever type bikes.

100km course ... notice I didn't say route.
Course comprised of 10 x 10km laps.
Entirely off-road, 60% gravel and 40% singletrack ... some fairly technical.
Mass start ... yes, it's a race. (It actually feels good to say that  )

Rules - sort of.

Once on course, no outside assistance or 'pitting'. Any mechanicals will need to be sorted out there with what you're carrying. Any food will need to be carried BUT water will be available on course.

Any bike welcome BUT it must be fitted with drop-bars and have tyres no larger than 50c (2").

I have a wonderful vision of proceedings in my head but others might view it quite differently

Sounds like a great idea, assuming I can get myself a new toy.

Reminds me of the HTN 8hr that people tried to finish on their CX bikes...few did.

I'd probably be on for it though!

Yeah, I'd probably be up for that if I'm available whenever it happens.

Got to draw a line somewhere Paul ... and as you've just proved, 2" was exactly the right place

Just for contrast. Not my cup of tea at all. Never enjoy repetitive loops or techy stuff on CX.

I'm mildly allergic to laps and 'races' so it's probably a no from me. Isn't this just a long XC race with some extra <shudder> rules?

Sorry to be negative (hey, it sounds like I'm in the minority anyway).

I suppose it is really Charles and please don't apologise - all feedback is good. As I say, it's an idea I'm simply toying with given that there's a seemingly ever growing number of gravel type bikes out there.

I'd probably be in.

Given that the Dirty Reiver took 500 (I think) registrations I'd be very surprised if there wasn't plenty of interest in something of this ilk.

Maybe, no tyres larger than 2" unless they're above 3"?

You forgot the bit about the event taking place in N Spain :-bd
I suppose you could get a suitably long lap in around Hafren forest and not fall foul of the stupid racing on bridleways law. Have you somewhere specific in mind?

I've got just the bike for that but I'm more of a tourist these days. If it had a mandatory pub stop and you couldn't continue until 3 pints of beer had been consumed I might be interested, perhaps a pint per lap with a handicap system based on pints consumed the previous evening.

I really must ride the Real Ale Wobble one day.
