I think the link from Stu are the main suppliers in the UK. They do pop up on ebay every now and then, or from military surplus type places

In the snow cave you'll still be wetter. Just not as cold, or as likely to die.

Be aware that they make trad cotton versions as well as the synthetic meraklon ones. You’re going to want the synthetic ones for high sweat activities.
If you are going through hell, keep going.

I've never spent more than 10 mins in one, a long time ago. I do remember it being fairly drippy. I thought, that a Norseman's string wifebeater would mean I could sit reading the Observer while eating my 'overnight groats' on our trip to Cairngorm this weekend. I'll pack a tent, Readybreck and a magnum of cheap malt.........

There's a way to shape the inside, so it doesn't drip.
But basically I just wanted to see many the many re-quotes.

Vacuum is the best insulatorwhitestone wrote: ↑Sun Dec 05, 2021 11:58 am Still air is the best insulator - all that "insulating" clothing does is provide a means of preventing air from circulating*. In the case of string vests, sorry technical base layers, the mesh leaves a grid of air pockets next to the skin. Ideally the material of the mesh transports any moisture away from you as well so you don't get that clammy feeling and also don't chill so quickly when you stop.
*snow is a brilliant insulator surprisingly, lots of air held in its matrix. Get in a snow cave and you can be 20-30C warmer than the outside temps.
I once, February 2004 to be precise, was is a shitty situation when testing a GPS device for an expedition and ended up digging a small vertical hole in the middle of the night to sit in and wait for dawn out of the wind. Sat in the hole on my rucksack with my downjacket on and let the snow fall on me. I even got some sleep. Always fun when you learn by experience what you already knew in theory.

Unless my thread has precipitated a rush, Nordic Life is who I have used, and they had stock of most of the SuperThermo / SuperThermo Wool stuff the day I started this thread (I was ordering a backup!)

Mine says 100% polypropylene on it - is that the same as meraklon? Pretty sure it's a super thermo, but it's made in Poland, not Norway and was an ebay purchase, so may be a moody copy....lune ranger wrote: ↑Mon Dec 06, 2021 7:12 pm Be aware that they make trad cotton versions as well as the synthetic meraklon ones. Same. Meraklon is a 100% polypropylene fabric.Retiredtester wrote: ↑Wed Dec 08, 2021 9:45 amMine says 100% polypropylene on it - is that the same as meraklon?
