December destination ideas?

Post by Mr conners »

Hi all.
This is a classic lazy "anyone reccomend a route for" post. But after a discussion with my better half we have a month off in December to get away and get a decent tour in. Has anybody any ideas for destinations that they have visited? Dry warm weather a must and lots of off road options. This will just help me focus the research.
Cheers

How far are you aiming to travel to get warm and dry conditions, Southern Europe, North Africa, Southern Hemisphere? What sort of daily distance did you have in mind? How are you planning to sleep, camp, B&B, etc? Point to point or circular route?

We can travel wherever.
Camping or cheapo accommodation
About 100km per day average. Totally depends on the conditions.
And a circular route preferably as its usualy logistically easier to get home.

Not exactly circular but a ride around the perimeter of Iberia would be an excellent adventure. Starting at the French border and following the Via Augusta for 1,500km to Cadiz then turning north up the Via Del Plata to Santiago de Compostella for a further 1,000km or into Portugal would tick most of your boxes. If money no object the Carretera Austral in Patagonia is on my to-do list but maybe a month is stretching it.

Most of this route is above 1,000m and several sections over 2,000m so a different climate to the Via Augusta which is nearer the coast. Snow can be a factor from mid November and sub zero nighttime temps are pretty well guaranteed. We rode it in September and nights were pretty chilly even then.

We did consider Spain but agree that the weather can be iffy in December. Baja divide has been considered but I'll need to train....a lot.

Yeh, December can be really rubbish. This was taken on the 5th. As long as you stay within 50km of the coast, the temperatures are very mild and there are still plenty of mountains to test you. Further inland the weather is more extreme, hotter in the summer and colder in the winter.

Booked to fly to San Diego with plans for the Baja.
