Wye Valley Greenway now open !

Post by javatime »

This is very good news - although within range of Bristol I don't cycle much in the Wye Valley / Forest of Dean due to fast traffic on the A48/A468 and B4228.

Looking forward to when we are allowed into Wales again to ride this, and perhaps it would make an alternative start/finish to Stuart's Offa's Bike route?

Great project.

I don’t understand why it’s closed at night?

I think it’s only the tunnel that’s closed at night due to it being a roosting spot for bats.

Is this Monmouth to Chepstow? Having difficulty finding a map with it marked.

It's Chepstow to Tintern

This is the best I can find for a map - keep scrolling !

Until you cross the River Wye at Tintern this path is all in England (but of course you need to cross a tiny corner of Wales to get there from Bristol  ).

As well as the bats, the tunnel is privately owned and I think there my be some worries of mis-use at night (always some that want to spoil things with a rave or the like  )

It's a great local facility and we have to thank the owners of the Dive Centre who got it off the ground and completed. The idea is to eventually continue the path to Chepstow with the right permissions / easements. There was an earlier sustrans plan to continue beyond Tintern to Monmouth but that was scuppered by nimbyism around Brockweir and the time limit on funding expired.
We go out into the hills to lose ourselves, not to get lost. You are only lost if you need to be somewhere else and if you really need to be somewhere else then you're probably in the wrong place to begin with.
