Micro tarp

Thought it was about time I got the 'Bear Pit' mini tarp finally sorted out. Latest proto' is a touch under 70g with lines and enough coverage to make a bivvy only a more bearable prospect in the rain.

Looks good. I have something similar that I made, but much less refined, and it does make bivvying much less unpleasant if it rains: don't have cover your face with your bivvy bag (with associated breathing/condensation problems), somewhere to cook/brew, somewhere to keep kit dry.

I just peg the "wings" down to the ground - means you can shove things into the corner and they stay dry, and it's not like ventilation is an issue.

How big is it?

I'm not a fan of pegging tarps directly to the ground Dave as it makes them less stable and more 'flap' prone but with something this small it's less of an issue really.

This one's 1.5m x 1.5m but the rear edge is cut at an angle - hard to explain but makes it easier to pitch.

I hadn't realised that, not being a regular tarp user (which reminds me that this current dry windy weather would be an ideal time to practice faffing with my new, larger, tarp - wish I'd paid attention to you at the packraft meet-up now  ). Presumably as close to the ground as possible without losing tension would be a good compromise though?

I think I get it, it's a diamond rather than a square? Ah good, I thought it looked smaller than mine, which is about 1.2m from memory, but obviously not. Maybe it's Ruby in the picture, making everything look smaller

To give folk an idea of how light this is, my 150x135 DCF Micro Tarp weighs 135g without guys.

Yeah pretty much. Always think of a tarp as (a) a free floating canopy and (b) requiring tension in multiple directions. Using lines (even short ones) allows that to happen.

Yes diamond - why didn't I think of describing it like that

With the "wings" being the widest diagonal?

Yes, a squashed diamond.

All diamonds are squashed, that's how they're made.

Wasn't it UB40? As an aside Mark King of Level 42 lives near me and I often ride past his house.
