Extending a rack platform

Post by FLV »

Just wondered if anyone has any clever ideas for extending a rack platform before I start messing with it over the break from work?

Basically, I have a nitto M18 rack. This one, as shown on bikepacking.com

Its very light, so I thought I would have a go at using it on the back with a drybag. given I use a dropper post, and that waggy seat packs annoy me / my dropper post pack is small. This seemed a reasonable thing to do.
It has P clips that come with it to secure it to the seatstays, I also still own a rack mount seat clamp like salsa rack lock. I'll knock up a bracket for that bit.

However, the platform is also a bit short and the dry bag will hang off it. Now it may be that fitting a mudgaurd under it and cable tying the mudguard to the rack base is enough to solve the problem. It also may be that it needs extending. I could use a bit of plastic if I can find some, or a couple of bits of rod jubilee clipped on with some inner tube between. etc etc.

But, wondered if anyone has done anything more elegant?

Ta.

Steel, well in that case I'd bend some tube and break the welder out :-bd

That's certainly on the list of maybes when I go back to work next year. I don't have the kit for that at home.

I reckon I'd go down that route Dave. Maybe even make a 'bolt-on' extender or possibly a hinged one?

I'd go a bit simpler, from a single piece of bent bar (maybe 4mm?)

Something like this:Image
