Magnetic windshield for gas stoves.

Whenever I've messed about with windshields for upright gas stoves, I've always found that they either turn out massive which means they're hard to carry, complicated or that they encase the cylinder too much. For some reason, a potential solution dawned on me yesterday.

I had a rummage in the workshop and found a roll of .3mm stainless, then raided my stash of very strong but very small magnets and set about seeing whether the idea might work. I'm pleased to say that it does.

The thing can be rolled up without coming to any harm and doesn't take up much room. The magnets hold it very securely to the canister but still allow you to adjust the thing up / down and to increase the diameter a little. This one's a bit lardy at 9g but I'll make a Ti one now I know it seems to work. I'll also add some vents around the base.

Oh i’m liking this
Do you bond the magnets to the windshield?
I know if they are loose I would probably lose them

Yes Mart ... I'd lose them otherwise too

Great idea that Stu, very interested...

Hopefully there’s no danger of enough heat transfer to the magnet to blow the thing up....

Yikes   :-bd

Neat. I have the clip-on Optimus windshield. It takes up little room as it fits round a 250ml gas canister. However it's not light (though I see the current version has holes in).

Would be worried about heat transfer to the canister?

Can't imagine there'd be any, too much surface area and not much material in contact with the canister

virtually nothing Shawn. The shield is a big old radiator, meaning even with a stove going at full tilt, there's no real heat at the bottom of the shield where it attaches to the canister.

Nice idea Stu... have the exact issue with a Pocket Rocket on a canister and my bodged windshield is never high enough or stable enough around the stove and a taller Ti pot... Clever 10/10

Remember that the cylinder will cool under normal use due to heat loss when the fuel turns from liquid to gas. Then the windshield has a high surface area compared to its mass leading to more heat loss. Finally the windshield isn't that close to the flame so it's not subject to particularly high temperatures to begin with.

As promised, a Ti version of the magnetic shield. I've made it slightly taller than the stainless one and added air vents, it's also slightly thicker so rolls easily without creasing and will handle plenty of abuse.

I might lose the top row of holes as they're not really required and it will allow people to shorten the thing if they wish.

The extra height and thicker material account for the increase in weight - it's now 11g.

I'll get the first batch made up this week.

Cool. Are these sized for a 100ml canister or a 250? (I guess the former would work but just have less coverage with the bigger diameter container)

Either way, put me down for one of these, a pair of Bear Paws and 4 mug bands. 🐻

A 100 really Colin but as you say, no reason why they can't be used with a bigger canister. I'll take some pics of that later so you can see how much coverage it provides.

On a 250 cylinder, you get something that looks like this.

They'll all be Ti Eric. The stainless one was simply to see if the idea worked or not.

Any plans for some kind of windshield for the remote gas stoves, by remote I mean hose fed from a canister? I've got the little Vango one, and currently have a PITA home brewed shield, but this looks much nicer.
