Doethie Valley trip, January 2012

Post by Dyffers »

Chris n and I had a dirty weekend with the bivvy kit in mid-Wales in January. In the end we didn't use the tarp and stayed the Saturday night in Moel Prysgau bothy.

Route:
Saturday: Llanwrted Wells, NW into Tywi Forest, Dolgoch Hostel, Wales' wettest bridleway ;), bothy.
Sunday: East then south along edge of Tywi Forest, Doethie Valley, Llyn Brianne dam, Llanwrted Wells.

I watched gairy's bikepacking Alaska vid yesterday morning, then thought I might have a go with my slightly-less-professional set of photos from Wales last month.

Turned out alright for a first attempt (with apologies to I Am Kloot; the first album I found on my HDD).

Looks good! Should've shot some video - those stills from above the Doethie valley don't show just how windy it was, though I'm glad you didn't catch me being blown off my bike.

Yeah, sorry, I knew that. I should have said 'the bikepacking Alaska vid that gairy linked to'.

Always difficult to capture the atmosphere of the Doethie, especially in still shots. Still, a good compilation all the same.

You guys took a tough enough route out of Llanwrtyd. The trails west of Cwm Irfon aren't the easiest to ride by any means (the climb into the first piece of forest is better as a descent ;) )

Yeah, there was a push up some of that to start with. Then on the way back we hooned down the stoney bridleway that would've been ridable going upwards. Shame.

Yes, but I wouldn't follow it if I were you. :D

We rode out of Llanwrtyd the wrong way, I wouldn't recommend the bridleway running north from Llyn Brianne and the bridleway heading to the bothy was more like a river. The rest of it was pretty good though - not much 'proper' MTBing but lots of good forestry tracks and the Doethie valley itself is well worth a trip.

PM me an email address and I'll send it over once I find the file.

Thanks Chris....I have the route. Now all I need to do is make it longer and find the ridable way at the start. Thank you once again!!!
