Bivvy a month 2014 thread.

Post by Bearbonesnorm »

Here we go then ... I know there's lots of people considering this for the coming year so I thought I'd start this. Post up your triumphs, failures, intentions, pictures and excuses.

I feel that we should just clarify that : bivvy, tent, tarp, hammock, bothy, bus stop, beer garden, hedge are all fair game but B&B, pub or under the clothes maiden with a blanket draped on top in the living room, aren't ;)

I almost slept in my van last night but forced myself into the South Westerlies and found a reasonably sheltered spot. Shame they were South Easterlies at 7am mind!

Well I am going for the full bivy a month but I am in addition hoping that I will get six 2 nighters in the supposedly better months. We will see.

I'll give it a go too.

1/12 in the bag
A rather slow pootle up the Pennine bridleway from home, over an old nemisis that is brown hill, back to piethorne res (no pies here) and a very very windy and wet night.

The trails arent in very good condition at all, very slimy... so much so that I bypassed a few on the way back down.

Diddnt actually enjoy much of it, but there you go, all good stuff I guess.

Good effort Dave!

I'm in again for this year. I'm going to bivy in the garden tonight (obviously a non counter) to test a very light possibly water proof bivy bag. I'm not convinced how water proof it is hence the test run...

I managed 23 last year so am sort of aiming for two a month. Am riding from home to keswick at the end of the month so will get a couple in there.

Careful you don't blow away ianfitz.
I'm going for excuses of the month

1. My bike is in the bike hospital, seeing as I wore out the bottom bearing in Morocco
2. It's bloody freezing outside
3. It's wet
4. My neighbour is on holiday (I know, what's all that about?)
5. I have a nice cosy house and bed!
6. I bivvied (not sure if that's the correct verb) on Christmas Eve so that must count as double time
7. If only I was younger
8. When the kids leave home (Oh, they already have, so that's not valid)
9. My shoes will get wet
10. Next month ;)

I've never actually bivvied before so I'm aiming for 12 nights over the year rather than one a month.

Does using just the outer of a terra nova laser as shelter count or is that cheating?

I was just thinking of lightness and simplicity really. The inner is a bit useless and I reckon sleeping in the outer in a bivvy bag would actually keep you dryer on a very wet night. Just a thought.

Conditions will play a part ... you might find a bivvy bag under a tent outer produces lots of condensation.

Good man ... it's often the best way and sometimes the only way of discovering what works and what doesn't ;)

Does bivvying on NYE count as 2013 or 2014? On the grounds that I spent more hours bivvied on the 2014 side of midnight I'm going for 2014! :D

I've also got this dilemma! I think it should count for both!

that's a relief, this month the calendar is pretty much full with family stuff and it looks like Friday 31st will be my first (and last) chance to get out in Jan.
Wait for me...

Managed to get my first one in so I'm hoping it'll give me the drive to carry this on throughout the year.
A 17 miler from the doorstep in North Wales to a nice sheltered spot near Aber Falls. The weather was fine and I really enjoyed it :)

I'm counting this weekend's 'stone-bivi' night as my 1 for 1 for 2014 but I'm hoping that I'll get another actual bivi night in before the month is over.
