Barrow In Furness - Lancaster On The Big Truck

Post by Escape Goat »

It's been a while since I done any distance work on a bike, but now the weather is changing for a little bit better I've been re-inspired to play outside again. This week I finished a 29plus build of a Surly Wednesday and thought that I best give it a bit of a shake down (more on that later) prior to a Snowdonia bivvy ride I have planned;

Setting off at 5.28am to meet up 30 minutes away at 5.45 am to make the 6.34 direct train to Barrow In Furness, I turned up at my friends at 5.58am...he was sat in his car waiting after I said "We will go in my cat, as it's already loaded". Naturally, this didn't work, as I wasn't on my cat today, I chose my car. Some bike swap faff, 50mph average speed cameras and about a ton of watch twitching and my slow driving, I got us there with at least 10 minutes to spare! We pondered for a while, then figured we best press the magic button that allows us to get on the train. The doors opened, we got on, then the train went a few minutes later.

At 8.04am we were in Barrow In Furness...or BIF for short.

It wasn't hot. The sun wasn't out, it was cooooold. We debated weather to just start from the station, but I insisted in starting at the propper start point, otherwise it doesn't count...but mostly I wanted to ride on the beach super quick.

Seams that breakfast wasn't available on Northern Trains (obviously) it was quite some time before I could eat... When I did eat, I seamed to have got the rest of the sausages available in the world on a bun, with brown sauce and pepper!

This was in a little place called Flookburgh, took a picture of the sausage bringer shop and shortly after had to answer a little pop quiz of why I was taking pictures of the shop. I simply said that I was cycling my bike, needed food and wanted to remember where I went. After the air had been cleared I was served with a smile and filter coffee in those cups that are oh so good to bite!

A few miles happened after the sausage feast and then a little bit of off road happened. I had high hopes of miles upon miles of this after the bridge, but it was short lived, then back onto the roads it was.

We stopped at a pub (though my friend didn't want to keep stopping at every place to get something to eat or drink due to his knee wanting to blow up with KneeHurtySyndrome which I've had too!) So I didn't push him as it was hit and miss if he could complete the ride. The pub did however have some nice fine ales, which I'm sure would have given us some much needed calories!

The rest of the ride was good, except the built up area around Morecambe, seamed a little too busy for my liking, but going back to the shake down thing, these stairs certainly helped me, I think my head almost shook off when I rode down them. Hooligan, I thought...but when nobody tells me not too... :roll:

We got to Lancaster and only had to wait 10 minutes for the train. Enough to get a quick coffee and fumble getting the bikes on the train with one hand of bike and the other hand of coffee. Due to the lack of space, we got to stand up from Lancaster to Preston, yay.

All in, quite a good ride, shame that the cassette that I was donated as I was on a budget had 3 meffed up gears, 7,8 and 9..so I was spinning too much, or in one gear too heavy, I guess I'll have to get one ordered in for myself, just don't tell the Mrs!

Ah, my old neck of the woods :grin:

My dad was from Flookburgh and that looks very much like the Derby Arms at Witherslack.
