Re: It's the 2021 "What Gravel Tyre...?" Thread

The Conti Terra Trails were 40mm and I didn't think the extra 3mm of the Gravel King SKs would make much difference, but they're huge in comparison. How big do the Resolute's turn out...? Are they a skinny 42mm or quite beefy? The Resolutes measured actual width of 43.4mm on a rim with 23mm interna...

Re: It's the 2021 "What Gravel Tyre...?" Thread

My Camino came with Resolutes on and I found them to be very puncture prone. 9 punctures in the first 2 weeks or so. Set them up tubeless which made it better but still loads of punctureswith 1 in 3 needing a plug. Swapped them out for Pananracers and so far no punctures in over 6 months, and with ...

WTB Resolute would be my suggestion. I've not used the Raddler, but not a huge fan of the Riddler.

My thoughts on the Resolute here https://off.road.cc/content/review/tyre ... eview-7679

Re: WTD: Shimano XTR 980 44/42t chainring

Still looking.

I think Shimano gave them 2 names, Trail & Race.

I think race was 980, 40, 42 or 44t outer and in the outer position.

Then 985 Trail, double and this was 38t with blanking plate on the outer location.

I've got the Trail currently, but after a bigger double.

If you start in the beacons you can reach the Cambrian Mountains and those combined make a fantastic and wild area to explore.

Yes, it's at the bike shop to collect tomorrow.
It was a case of knowing what they had ordered but not pre-sold, rather than deciding on something specific.

WTD: Shimano XTR 980 44/42t chainring

A bit random, but after one in good condition.
I'd also take the 30t inner chainring too.

Re: Oval rings. Absolute Black or Absolute B*ll*cks?

I used oval for a few years and liked them. I only stopped as I was testing bikes that had round rings and it was awkward going back and forth.

The biggest difference I felt was an improvement in technical climbs, they just made it feel a bit easier.

Re: Going tubeless...

For me, low 30's gravel bike at 42mm, low 20's MTB. I've gone lower with a tyre insert with some success.

I'll take: tube, glueless patches, tyre boot, big co2 or 2x 16g and small pump.

Re: Road bike price

Its a very strange period for bikes, especially road bikes under £1000. You simply can't get many and prices have gone up, so where I'd have said maybe £300-400 before you're likely to get more now. Perhaps try £750 if it's mint and try Facebook marketplace first as eBay fees are huge. Just expect l...

Re: Refilling a smaller gas bottle

On the safety front, all gas canisters will be designed and tested to take high pressures. I think unless you are forcing gas in, not just using gravity and doing so while inside a freezer and then using the bottle in the open in the desert you will be fine. I also have one for the cheap butane bott...

Re: bike seat for carrying a toddler

I've got a Shotgun & Mac ride and the Mac ride wins for me. It won't fit every bike but if it does its so easy to fit and kids are very happy on it. We have a Burley trailer too and that's good too, but depends where you're going and if you want to chat and if they will stay awake. Also when the...

Re: Recommend a saddle bag

A harness system will allow you to chop and change capacity easily, so worth considering. Matt says he likes the Ortlieb but I couldn't get on with it. It was just too big and appeared to have an inbuilt hinge in the centre. Maybe they've altered the design since I tested one? They have several siz...

Re: Recommend a saddle bag

Ortlieb or Wildcat both very good for premium options. Miss Grape good too.
I've tested lots and do far those stand out so far.

As for size, go bigger and if you think 9 is enough, go up a size. If you don't need it all, you can close the bag up.

Re: Reynaulds sufferers

I don't have Reynaulds but do have cold extremeties on rides. My favoured gloves are Gore Therma and they still manage to be quite minimal to give some feel. Beyond that I had some Sportful Fiandre deep winter gloves that were warm but also bulky. I've heard that Dissent 133 ultimate are good, which...

Squirt all year round.

I've tried all the main brands, many people have recommended here and come back to squirt. Works well and keeps the chain far cleaner than oil lubes.

Re: Forestry operations on rights of way

My understanding is that if they need to close a RoW for harvesting they need to apply for a CRoW closure order. If one existed they would need to put a notice on the start and end of any closure. In reality in forests where public are not frequent they won't apply. I'd suggest finding out who they ...

I'm using Stu's pole & pegs with my Gatewood Cape and both are fine.

It makes for a really lightweight setup.
I made a custom mat using polycryo and that's good too.

It's only a setup I'd use in the nicer months mind but that's just personal choice.

Re: Hate to bring it up again but ...

I suspect Matt that people who rarely hike up a hill, or get out into the countryside often feel safety in numbers, if they can see a stream of people going up and down a hill, then they don't need to attempt to navigate anywhere or feel they might get lost, plus they know there will be an ice-crea...

Exposure have a specific mount for helmets, so that could work and I really rate the light.

Another possible mount option, although only if you have QR wheels is a KCNC threaded fitting that takes the place of the QR end cap that you can mount to.

I think Derbyshire police reported over 200 cars parked at the top of the Snake Pass yesterday, which is far more than you'd expect on a sunny Bank Holiday. As people have said, Rotor have a 13-speed but its not really mainstream. Campagnolo Ekar really impressed me. Not just the range, which is good but the ergonomics. It is lacking smaller chainrings though, so for big trips, loaded bikepacking, etc it might be a little too much. It was one of the bes...
