Re: Before Cuben, carbon and Dyneema

I have one of those Phoenix Goretex bivvy bags as well which is still functional for the most part (it has one seam on the hood which is taped externally for some reason and the tape on that has peeled off, the internal taping on the other seams is still fine). Mine is screaming red not the more po...

The porch on my Phreak was home to my old labrador on many a backpacking trip.
I also have a Phoenix Goretex bivvy bag still in regular use (I was in it on our FoD trip Reg). Must be coming on 30 years old now!

700g, 1L pack size, double skin, airbeam inflate with bike pump. Sounds interesting (if you have that kind of spend).

If you can be certain that you are not carrying the virus then you represent no threat at all, so all is good. Except... what happens if you pick up the virus on your travels; maybe off a gate that someone passed through minutes earlier, or a stile, indeed anything that may have been touched by some...

Re: Dummies guide to packing bags!

I think it can depend on the ride and how you want to ride it. If you're wanting to ride at pace on mostly gravel tracks then weighting the front wheel could be a good thing. If like me you're somewhat heavier than Reg and you like to sit up and enjoy the view then balancing the weight between the w...

Re: Salsa go SS Gravel.

I bought a brand new Il Pompino (no sniggering at the back now) some years ago for about £300 - that's full ss specific dropped bar steel framed bike. A not dissimilar bike. I have also spent considerably more than that Salsa costs on a custom ss bike back in 2003 which I still ride regularly (indee...

I'm a bit like gairym but the other way round! P=Peter, Sling=greatly shortened version of my very long surname. I too have great difficulty putting names to faces, even recognising faces (apparently this is a recognised "thing" and has a medical name). The idea of printing names on BB kit...

My Dad has a 26" Ridgeback in his garage, hasn't been used in years. Has all the wrong angles, three front chainrings, flat tyres, duff brakes, the works. I think that would be pretty unsuitable... Sounds very similar to my most regularly used bikepacking bike - except for the flat tyres and d...

atk wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2020 8:57 pm Where do singlespeeds count on the spectrum of suitability?
As a drive system ss can be perfectly suitable and sometimes preferable. It would be the bike rather than the gears that might be unsuitable e.g. a track bike, a jump bike, or a bmx may be considered unsuitable

Re: Do you own an unsuitable bike?

I would say my road bike. Skinny-tyred, high-geared, what we used to call racing bikes.
My personal definition of bikepacking involves some or indeed mostly off-road riding which makes that bike totally unsuitable.

Re: Wildcamping spots - the 8 best.

How exactly do you define " the best "? If a definition is 'remote, quiet and uncrowded with spectacular views' (which appears to be an aspirational requirement) then it's pretty counter-productive to list that place as a destination in a 'best of...' list. The above list does seem to cons...
