Personally I can ride local lower lower than unfamiliar as I know what's coming. I would advise riding unfamiliar terrain to see what works.Do some local loops at night and experiment.

Re: All night lights
Good Light that as I have one as back up ( the bracket alone costs a tenner as I lost mine ) and it's run times are pretty good and it's a good spread for both off and on road . Not quite exposure standards but it's insanely cheap at that price.

For cycle applications and holding a bottle or rack a M4 will be fine probably but bigger wi...

Like most MTB routes probably better when dry ( on the ground) which it mainly was .
You never spell my name right and I am.not telling you how to

Re: WRT stories
The Garmin Touring GPS really doesn't like it when you go off route and will quite happily navigate you along big sections of trail only to tell you to do a u-turn once it thinks you've rejoined the route. So does a 530 if you ignore it's advice as to how to get back on the trail even when back to ...

Better to take your climbing legsNext (big) ride planned for the 3rd and it would be wise to take some headlights.
I am only taking an exposure joystick and not expecting to be out in the dark.
