Re: Like a Carradice but lighter?
Cotton duck and leather isn't my cup of tea really Tbh, I really like the old-style cotton-duck and leather Carradice, but do get miffed at having to undo buckles at times especially in the cold and rain. First world problems eh? Plastic snow-clips so much easier, but sooooo fricken ugly, to my eye...

.....try these guys https://www.mackworkshop.com/collections/all They have VX21 in a bunch of colours, based in Bristol, and do custom orders. Sure they'd make you a Carradice inspired bag if you asked. They have a big Rando bag for £140, so presumably that or less. Using a saddle bag on the front o...

Cinelli do a stem with a 35deg rise* that looks similar to that position, called the Pista. Cheap too.Mariner wrote:Brilliant idea until I found that nobody makes a stem of that spec so still got the adjustable fitted.

Re: Talk to me about Rohloff
I've been selling bikes with Rohloffs on for the best part of 20 years, and been to various workshops in Germany given by Rohloff tech folk. Rohloffs used to be shipped without any oil in at all, and the wheel builder had to fill them. It's about 20ml of a fairly fine oil. Of course, a few got throu...

Re: The Rough-Stuff Fellowship Archive book
Only recently at work did I suggest in all seriousness that we produce a cyclist's poncho. Now I see the real style value in it and where that subliminal seed probably came from. The lycra backlash alliance has another ally : ) (and, backed - looking forward to this) They're readily available you k...

Thanks for all info, appreciate it. Speaking of things that do or do not work better with hundreds and thousands inserted....does anyone remember the early Avocet cycle computers that came in different colours and were mainly useless once it rained? Because there were so many borked ones around I us...

Reading up on Orange sealant....."lasts 45 days between top-ups"
That's a pretty good sealant habit right there. Or do folks just leave it till they think they probably should. like every 6 months or so?

Re: Alternatives to glitter as a sealant additive?
Pretty sure I've seen hair clippings mentioned as a biodegradable option. Interesting idea, but sadly if you come and stand round the back and stand on tip-toes, you can just about see that I'm getting to being just a teeeny bit bald. I'd have to go over the road to the barbers and ask for some flo...

Alternatives to glitter as a sealant additive?
New to tubeless and looking at buying a couple of pints of sealant, wondering what peoples preferred sealant is currently, and what they add to it if anything? Glitter seems to be a recurrent favourite but I'm keen not to litter the planet with any more plastic bits than I need to so wondering if th...

Re: London calling
Barking to Excel's like a 5 mile ride, it'd be daft not to ride it. I just had a look at likely routes and though not pretty, there's good cycle ways nearly all the way. The three rules of safe London cycling are 1. Assume none has seen you. 2. Ride predictably. 3. Don't ride on Canal tow-paths in t...

For warm summer use or an extra to your main bag the PHD Ultra should be fine.
If you're anywhere around London and want to see one and the Cumulus you're welcome to give me a shout.

Re: Quilts: toebox or not?
If you're looking at the PHD Ultra, Mrs vert bought one last year in the sale and very nice it is too. There's no baffles as in the Cumulus or EE offerings, the cells are just sewn through. It's very light. It's nothing like as warm as my Cumulus 250, and unlikely to be used much on it's own but is ...

On my way into the house the other day with my chosen ride (basically a posh 80's mtb with drops) a new neighbour said "Oh - is that a touring bike?"
It was easiest to just say yes.

I had one this summer, has a footbox, but an open one with a zip up the side so it can be opened out fully. The specs on their website currently are: YKK zip at the bottom allowing to create a footbox with two self-locking sliders The zipper can be opened at the bottom for better ventilation Additio...

Re: flexy frame?
Reckon 2 small fronts on low-riders would be perfect on that. It's worth having a bit of extra weight on the back to balance out the braking and to keep the bike neutral handling, which is why a saddlebag/pack of some sort is such a trad go-to with low-riders. Just like bikepacking, best to have the...

got 2 bikes now, a ecr with zero flex, rides like a very comfy tank. also got a reynolds 631 tubed touring bike. without panniers, the 631 bike is very comfy and smooth, but just had a week away touring with a single pannier, which weighed maybe 12-15lbs. the bike rode like a thing made out of stra...

Re: Penny farthing
I could be wrong as I've never ridden an ordinary, but this seems to have an incredibly relaxed head angle compared to any others I've seen. I'm wondering how that would affect the handling, and whether it'd even be rideable. A wheel that size with that angle would steer really slowly. Too slow for ...

Re: Get yourself seen
Given that absolutely no coppers anywhere care about anyone using flashing lights on their bikes (emergency services only anyone?) I reckon you're safest having a big white reflective and/or white light, on the back of the bike, pointing rearwards. My reasoning being that car drivers see a red light...

haha - no tin foil hat here, but cynical? Oh yeah. So I did a small amount of reading wikipedia tells me they're a German firm which sprang out of RadSport who used a designer from Votec (bugly as ever), and it seems they do ride nicely.
