Re: Pubs off tarmac
What about the Ty Coch Inn at Porthdinllaen? I think there is a tarmac road to it/the beach, but it's a private road. I walked along the beach but I guess you could ride on the beach too. Utterly fantastic views from there too, and saw a few seals hauled out on the rocks just round the corner, and s...

Re: New Bike Gear Out And Due Out...
You're right about drop bar MTBs (see https://nordestcycles.com/en/product/kutxo-frame ) I quite like the sound of the 725 steel version of the Rove. It looks super practical, with mounts for everything including mudguards. It'll no doubt be good value too. Quite 'old fashioned' geometry in some way...

Re: OMN (Yet Another Post-Viewranger Navigation app thread)
OMN looks v interesting, mainly because it is simple! It even offers route printing of maps which is nice. I use outdooractive, but only really to view OS maps, very rarely follow routes or do any planning on it, and all the other features have no interest to me. OMN looks good because it doesn't ha...

Re: Advice sought building a gravel bike.
On the Camino -in either form it's a great bike, no toe overlap issues for me. Very versatile, although depending on your riding needs 'into the wild' then 27.5x2.1/29x2.0 might not be enough. 29x2.0 is pretty tight in the back of my one too, that's with a narrow rim. They can take road or mtb chain...

Re: Dorset Divide 2022
Well I hope @Johnallan is enjoying some time in Dorset, it looked like the ride missed the worst of the heat. Turns out I follow him on Instagram, and here's an update from the dorset divide account on his progress: "And there we have it! An incredible ride by John Allen with an even more impre...

Re: Carradice expedition support struts or similar.....help please.
Found the link and in the comments below it says what they are: "Hey Matt, thanks for the kind words! The stays are actually just Wald basket support struts that I repurposed with p-clamps to add a little lift and stability to the Carradice Bagman support." Sounds a decent and cheap way to...

Re: Todays ride
Got out at 5am on Sunday to beat the heat, and went for a decent 40 mile mixed terrain route, taking in some nice byways across the border in North Hampshire. Lovely being out early and it was all very enjoyable, including a close encounter with a tawny owl, and seeing lots of hares and two foxes. C...

Re: Adders- Dartmoor and Exmoor
Google tells me the last human adder death in the UK was 1975, to avoid bites (very very unlikely indeed) just look where you put your feet/tyres. They actively avoid human noise and disturbance, and have poor eyesight, they're not going to come near you if you're sleeping out. Not sure on prevalenc...

Re: Cycling in the heat.
I'm on the slightly more concerned end of the spectrum because it's forecast to be 38 here on Monday, right on the edge of the red warning, and preparing to stay inside and keep cool and shady. Keeping kids cool and getting them to actually sleep will not be fun - nor for me either tbh. I think an e...

Re: My BB200 Black Badge (training) Thread.
All of this training larks is making me realise i'm probably not doing enough riding, but I think my gate game is fairly strong (having to lob the bike over kissing gates and stiles on 'cheeky' trails). Then I remember i'm not going for a black badge so my magic number is a bit lower, phew! Anyway -...

Re: Dorset Divide 2022
Well it's not going to be much fun riding this through a heat wave! Best of luck and enjoy, to anyone who is doing it! It looks a good-ish route and certainly takes in lots of the county. As an exiled native of Dorset, the south and especially east of the route will be the easiest in terms of terrai...

I always thought the best thing to do was not clean a new chain, as the grease/wax on it is a good lubricant??

Re: Gravel porn
Their product images are definitely messed with a lot. That AL frame has a more pronounced scoop out of the seat tube, and they also left in a cable rear disc brake (presumably form another build) in the photo, and they've chopped off most of the bottle cage bosses...

Re: Gravel porn
The AL version looks a fair bit better, but with MTB inspired geometry doesn't necessarily mean extra tyre clearance (not surprising with 425mm chainstays):

New rear wheel for a recently acquired 2nd hand mini micro scooter, the last kid had done some seriously long skids on it as it had two very flat spots on it, practically a square wheel!

Lead with the right (but fine with either), keep left if there's any sort of 'traffic' (other trail users) but otherwise entirely led by line choice

Re: Todays ride
What felt like a decent ride for the first time in a while, some nice unofficial tracks along an old railway, then along the Wayfarer's Walk [byway] for a bit. Loads of nice off road, and legs tingling from nettles/brambles on the overgrown bits. Lovely. https://i.ibb.co/qy1hMzn/PXL-20220703-1455526...

I'll be keeping an eye/interest in this...it's my first BB event and I haven't got much in the way of goals besides enjoying riding, enjoying being back in Wales, and finishing.
