Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

Thanks Reg had Pete, it was emotional. I would not have memory of his first jobs of course but the jobs he did in the late 60's and early '70's I do recall. The last PS in particular because I see it so regularly I think of him.

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

July: This weekend it will be 5 years since my father died and the germ of this idea came from a song I heard years ago by Christy Moore and more recently by The Mary Wallopers called 'Building up and tearing England down'. It is a song about men, like my father, coming to England for work post war....

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

Pancakes! I sometimes make a big batch, freeze them and stick them in the toaster. Maybe I should take some with me on a trip and cook them, not the same as making from scratch though. I have done a July bivvy but been a bit busy with a trip to the TCR start and house work. Will catch up sometime, h...

Re: Chester to Ludlow via Snowdonia.

I am having a poor year on the BCQ’s, well done one your ride. I have only got 4 this year on all on one day before getting ill in the evening. But for the illness I would have got 3 more but even so I need to pull my socks up to get to at least 20 this year.

Re: North York Moors 300

I enjoyed the reports, thanks for sharing. I lived in York for nearly a decade and knew the golf balls well travelling to orienteering events or Whitby, I did not know they had been replaced. Won't be taking the grandchildren then. I only did one Boltby Bash but that would have been around 1994 or 1...

Re: The Tour Divide 2023 thread

Thanks Verena. I didn't recall the names of the riders who did the GBDuro that year and perhaps not enough interest in all the races. Will be interesting to see what she does in the future.

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

Reg, yes, seen a couple of organisations doing something similar. I hope this wasn't the inspiration, although I do wonder. I worry about it getting out of hand with large numbers who may not respect the countryside, leave no trace etc, leading to banning what we shouldn't be doing anyway. Then I te...

Re: The Tour Divide 2023 thread

I saw that Gail Brown was the first Brit to finish and in a quick time. I had not heard of her before this race. Jerry Sharp who I am following is constantly switching between blue and white dot as he is around the 28 day time, he is 66. He is approaching Cuba just behind the dot so I think he will ...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

Thanks Reg and Frog... I don't suppose I really thought the thread would still be going over a decade later, it was started in 2012. I do enjoy reading the reports and genuinely proud that a rather pointless exercise has given a number of people a challenge whether for one year to several. I know so...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

Late entry for June. Myself and Reg met at Chesterfield Station on Wednesday and spent 24 hours riding to the east of the Peak. I don't know the area well as I have avoided it because of the hills. I had arrived a few hours early and done a short circuit to grab 11 Veloviewer tiles at the extent of ...

Re: Taunus Bikepacking No.6

Sounds like you made some good decisions out there. I fancy that ride but also know the steep up and downs do not suit me. After the 2009 or 2010 Tour Divide race I read about one rider who was so determined to get from Banff to the US border in two days he was shattered when he got there and retire...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

My first attempt at a June bam failed when I became ill at the end of the first day. I planned to ride Alsager > Maghull >Morecome > Way of the Roses > Bridlington and home via train or bike depending on time and energy. I paid for camping in Maghull near my daughters in order to see her and family ...

Yes, Koko Claims adds a hour or two at the front so impressive that Ulrich ahead already. Mike was on his third run, I believe, when he set his record so had course experience. Just seen this for anyone interested in the origins. My first memory was an article in a UK cycle mag around 1999/2000 for ...

Re: The Tour Divide 2023 thread

I will be keeping track of Jerry Sharp from Derby who rode it about 4 years ago. He is 66 and aiming for 28 days. The bike I used was quite inexpensive, about £700 or so. The frame was a dinged ex demo Voodoo Aizan from Sideway's Cycles, forks and wheels s/hand from STW ( wheels never been used)*. T...

Re: Bivvy a month 2023.

Does Scunthorpe count as a good place to head for? A localish bike shop, Velotastic in Chesterfield, publishes routes from time to time. I had done a chunk of one last year and they recently included a 101 mile route North from Worksop. I had been planning a 90-100 mile route from Derby along NCN6 t...

Re: Today's Walk.

On Sunday myself and herself walked 10km around Welbeck Abbey grounds. It is closed to the public but is opened up for one day a year for a 10km charity run and walk. The real motivation for attending was being able to get into two Veloviewer tiles that are not normally accessible. There is a third ...

My friends enjoyed it as well, one of their club members won one of the junior classes. Scottish 6 days were fun. I ran in them between 1977 and 1991. The ‘77 courses used the 1976 World Championships maps. Have a great time. My friends are off to race in Ireland shortly, both sides of the border. T...

I hope to do the route this summer if time allows. I would be getting the train across and have not studied the route closely enough on which station makes most sense for me.
