Re: Spot tracker - borrow or buy?

I agree with Scattamah, I have a Gen2 off ebay (c.£30) and its fine for what I needs. I live in Yorkshire and sometime the mobile signal is non-existent. Having the Tracker with me means I can go where ever the day takes me without having to think about letting 'home' know where I am going. They can...

Dave

This website might help:

The main routes are the Greenways - they are mainly old railway lines with a few B-roads.

Plan changes early and they are easy to use. I run my cable under the bar tape. The front can use a standard cable, but you need a tandem cable for extra length on the rear.

Re: Any ideas for northern seaside bivi spots. . .

Robin Hood bay is very nice. You could also catch a train to Hull from Sheffiled, or one of the earlier spots. Then follow the Transpenine Way, this is mainly onroad to Hull. There is a bridle path that you can take from Hull (about 2 miles out of the city) that takes you to Hornsea. From there you ...

Re: best adventure mattress?

I have an Exped DM 5, which is excellent for warmth and the depth is fine with me. But it does pack big. I was at a Black's at the weekend and stumble across a Exped 5, without the Down, it packed very small and was incredibly lightweight and only £35. I've no idea what the R-value is, but maybe wor...

Re: gps help

Nice bit of kit, I use the Garmin 605 and they are excellent for for going to new areas. You do need more than the Garmin maps, but I tend to us openstreet sources for this, there are plenty of options nowadays (including topos maps). Noted that the 800 comes from the US, so you may need to pay impo...

Re: Tyres, generally

I am using Rapid Robs and 40psi is where I would be for long road sections. They do bounce around a lot if there are sections of off-road - but you sometimes you have to make a compromise based on the route you are riding. I like the Robs on dry tracks, I find them pretty fast and fairly hard wearin...

Re: Forkin cages!

I use the Gorillas for my mat and TN bivvy. They are in 5l dry bags, but the reality is they are only 4l used. They are on the salsa rigid forks, so have the 3 mounting points in the forks. I like them, they keeps things tight and out of the way. There is a little swing on the dry bags, but not much...

I heading up the the Lakes this year to stay in the same area where I did my Silver and Gold, 30 years ago. The area is Boot, from there I will then do a walk up Scafel. When I was 17 we would then stay up at Burnmoor Tarn for a couple of days. It's a fantastic place and living in Bham, I would neve...

Re: D of E List

I loved the DofE walks when I was doing it nearly 30 years ago. Probably the main reason why I still like the outdoor lifestyle. I do remember a ridiculously heavy bag, with bruised shoulders at the end of the walk - but still some of my best times. Large quantities of smuggled alcohol helped!!! My ...

Re: What motivates you?

I have and still struggle with having a consistent motivation. I used to mountain bike, then I broke my arm and splintered my elbow, which had to be operated on. When I was back on the bike, I was aware that I had lost my bottle and was a bit of a liability for the people I was riding with. So I mov...

Re: Clippless shoe suggestion, I have learned!

I have always used Shimano for MTB (touring). Currently using Shimano MT60. I have found them excellent shoe - nice and stiff and waterproof. I have found thta Shimano MTB shoes can be very weird and sometimes size small and narrow. I have never had the same problem with Shimano road shoes though :?...

Re: Bike Specific Campervan Conversion

My Van wasn't designed specifically for bike carrying. I have a Thule towbar bike carrier, which I am happy to carry them around on. I haven't got the Remo equipment, nice but pricey. There are alternatives, but the rear seats should be crash tested, the last thing you want in a crash is the rear se...

I have had bespoke conversion done by complete camper conversions in Hull. The guy who runs it, Rich, is excellent and great fun. Re: front mechs, advice please

For shimano, road shifters will work with a road FD and a MTB/Road RD. If you are on drops, then you could try bar ends and they will work with anything.

I am not sure about MTB shifters or SRAM as I only use drops.
