Re: Down Jacket for star gazing before getting into tent
I've used an Alpkit Filo jacket in Rovaniemi (Lapland or northern Finland) in February at -15C without problem so not sure why you think it's a summer jacket.

If my experience of tropical countries is anything to go by then you'll be fine with a silk sheet and that would mostly be for modesty. A bit of searching suggests that in the mountains in the north the temperatures can get down to 10C so the Cumulus 150 would be fine with that.

Why don't you all come down to the Chilterns for the weekend and join us at Sam's field. Stu told us when, so we know the date. Reg is navigating, so we know where we're going. The hardest decisions we will have to make is whether to have the pork belly or sirloin. Darn sarf? But who'll look after ...

Wildcat here on the Jones bars on my fat bike. Useful for small stuff you might need to hand. The only thing missing (IMO) is a clip for keys.

Nice one. I wondered what Stew was up to on his Strava feed  Is the only soft ground that between the Roman Camp at Chew Green over Windy Gyle and Clennel Street down to Alwinton? Looks like most of the rest is on forestry tracks and similar. I've ridden bits around Alwinton many years ago and...

Re: Winter sleeping bags
If the manufacturers are quoting "comfort", "limit" and "extreme" ratings then they should have been tested to EN 13537 and so should be comparable. Of course one manufacturer might take a tested value of -4.5C and round it to -4C while another rounds it to -5C. At -5C ...

Re: Winter sleeping bags
What have you got at the moment Phil? You could get an overbag or quilt to improve the rating. I've a 5C rated bag and a 5C rated quilt. Together they are good to at least -6C (I've not had chance to test to lower temps) Edit: sorry missed the last paragraph. Quantum 200 is 0C rated, something like ...

Some years ago there was a court case in, I think, mid-Wales where the defendent had been banned from driving. This was way before e-bikes. He "modified" his bike using a strimmer motor to drive a flywheel which then drove the rear wheel of the bike. I seem to remember he got pulled at som...

It was a bit ad-hoc TBH. It kinda dawned on me that the last time I'd ridden the fat bike was in February on the Rovaniemi race in Finland. It was beginning to look like an ornament lying around the house!
Will drop you a line if I remember.

I use Shimano so it would be either SLX (M7000) or XT (M8000) for mech and derailleur. Chainwise I tend to go with KMC.

Spurning Brian - Fatbiking on the Yorkshire Coast
With the forecast for the west and central parts of the country looking decidedly iffy we headed East to have a pedal on the beaches to the north of Spurn Point. We parked up at Kilnsea and headed up the coast. First feature was the gas terminal at Easington https://i.imgur.com/u9kr8Sn.jpg We were t...

Reminds me of a line from that classic film "The Cannonball Run": "What's behind doesn't matter" (to be said in a comedy Italian accent if I recall correctly!)ScotRoutes wrote:It's not a race though.

Most people, for a variety of reasons, are somewhat resistant to change. Rather than saying "We want this" which tends to put people's backs up you have to "sell" the benefits: People using the local facilities so those facilities remain viable and therefore open during winter, e...

I'm with you on this Stu. Back in 2001 when Foot and Mouth kicked off there were some on the UKClimbing forums basically saying "sod 'em, I'll go where I want". A couple of posts later the manager of one of the local estates pops up with a response. I happen to know him and he's not a clim...

PHD need to acknowledge how they got the customer email addresses though. Probably a script that tests every business/si...

Not a recommendation for anything but it does depend on the speed you are travelling as well as the conditions (lighter vegetation will reflect some light making things seem brighter for example) I was fine with a Joystick on the low and mid settings on the Highland Trail but those were short secti...

The server logs should give a clue but the breach might have been some time ago and the criminals have been waiting to send out the spam. They could have been trying to crack passwords for example. 180 front, 160 rear on both bikes. Solid steel rotors on the Solaris, Hope floating rotors on the fat bike. Only advantage of same size front and rear is if the front rotor breaks or becomes very warped then you can swap the rear to the front without needing to adjust the mount. Not known of anyone ...

Basically email spoofing, it's not the originating email address that's important but the links within the email, clicking on them could install malware etc.
