Re: can i replace a GPS with a smartphone ?

Thanks for all the replies
I need a solution with which i can plan the next days riding whilst sat in the tent/pub.
With many GPS's you can't do this without a computer ( e.g Garmin )
Can this be done with an app on an Android smartphone ?

can i replace a GPS with a smartphone ?

Hi everyone, At the moment i carry a mobile when bikepacking and i have borrowed my mates garmin GPS a few times. The weight weenie in me would love to combine the functions into one unit IFAIK most posh mobiles now have a proper GPS built in that can establish location without a phone signal. Most ...

Re: New bike - decisions

loving my El Mariachi 2. Handles nicely and is good for endless miles in the saddle type riding. Mud clearance good and not too heavy. The alternator plates give both easy chain tensioning when in S.S or Hub gear without a weight and complication of an EBB. Being able to swap the plates if you go ge...

SOLD : Vaude Power Lizard UL 1-2 Tent

As the adverts say “This is an extremely lightweight tent choice that compresses down to an easily transportable package. Despite this, it still offers the sort of performance that Vaude pride themselves on, protecting from even the harshest of stormy weather whilst offering brilliant ventilation an...

Re: My cyclocamping - wildcamping setup

@Have to agree with Scotroutes about the sizing. There is nothing peculiar to the Salsa El Mariachi which causes the seatpack clearance issues. Any 29nr in a smaller frame size ridden by anyone with shorter legs will have these clearance issues. My 5'8" mate has to run the smaller size seatpack...

Re: My cyclocamping - wildcamping setup

Welcome I think, like many of us on here, you may end up with lighter / more compact kit in due course. Every time i come to an uphill technical section and have to walk when i know i could get up on an unladen bike i make a mental note to trim the kit again. As my kit has evolved, i can now ride fu...

Good article
My mate Phil has an almost identical handlebar to the third picture.
He has both gear shifters on one side.
It's on his full suss with 150mm front forks !
I hate it when he beats me downhill

Re: recommend me a lightweight but warm sleeping bag

+1 for PHD bags especially in the sale. They are doing Mimim 250 and 350 is the sale. Drishell option a good idea too. My tip is to be be realistic about the minimum temp you are going to use it in. i started with a -5°rated bag which i though would do everything i wanted. Trouble is i found it too ...

Re: Ultimate bike?

Hi Neil The alternator dropouts are really well engineered. You have a built in tugs bolts on each side very easy to use and i've had no slippage issues. lots of info on the Salsa website. I'm running quite a low gearing on the Rohloff for 3 reasons...My knees are shot, it gives me a 16" bottom...

Re: Ultimate bike?

Similar thoughts here.... a few months ago i bought a Salsa El Mariachi ( steel 29nr ) frame It has "Alternator" dropouts which give easy chain tensioning, a std bottom bracket shell ( no EBB ) and you can get different dropouts for geared, singlespeed and Rohloff setups The frame is not o...

Re: Pannier users - a q on chainstay lengths

Hi Ray, Check out the Tubus logo rack. Made from tubular steel it is both strong & light. ( it ain't cheap though ! ) I use this rack and the main thing i like about the logo is the pannier attaching bars are set a bit further back to give extra clearance. it's also nice to be able top strap som...

Re: Ultralight weights - sub 25lb?

I bought some of the msr carbon core pegs. I can't recommend them. I have snapped one very easily and the plastic top has come off a couple of the others. The Easton carbon core jobbies look very similar to me. i've got a couple of the Vargo Ti Nail pegs. The 9g ones are very strong and the 15g ones...

Re: Ultralight weights - sub 25lb?

Some interesting weight saving idea's in this thread which i am investigating. I've been trying to put it all on a diet since an infamous 52 lb weigh in of my bike and kit ( and a little Ridgeway mud ) after a bikepacking trip last autumn. My bike weighs 26 lbs for a start.....oops There doesn't see...
