Re: The backlash continues?
I’ve basically given up on social media because it just seemed to be populated by numpties encouraging other numpties to be numpties. I’m definitely happier for not playing the game but unfortunately me leaving doesn’t seem to have been enough to bring down any of the major social platforms. Maybe I...

Re: Icknield Way Double
Yup, you can overthink these things and there’s obviously lots of overlap between rigid 29er and gravel bike. I must say I was very happy with my Stooge on the KAW (both for low gears and comfort) but then I wasn’t particularly aiming for a fast ride.

Re: Icknield Way Double
Good effort.
Do you think a bike with fatter, knobblier tyres and lower gears would have helped with the slithery hills and been a better tool for the job overall in those conditions? Or were you still much faster on the flatter, drier bits?

Re: Using a smartphone instead of a Bike Computer
You can certainly get by with a phone. It’s likely to need charging fairly regularly, so you’ll need to plan stops and/or carry enough cache batteries and/or get a dynamo set-up. There are lots of apps that let you plot and follow a pre-planned route. Some also let you view OS maps. I use a combinat...

Re: Replacement hub advice please
I can understand why you want to change but, depending how much use it’s had, replacing bearings and pawls is par for the course. I’ve had lots of Novatech hubs (either branded as such or as part of Superstar wheels, and I’ve been very impressed. XT are good, and great value, if you can be bothered ...

Re: Inside or outside?
Local to me (Surrey Hills) there doesn’t seem to be a lot of choice. Very few, if any, places I’ve found to shelter indoors without a high chance of being turfed out or visited by the police. (Obviously I don’t have Reg’s Ruin Radar.) TBH I prefer to be outside anyway, unless it’s properly flinging ...

Re: Why eTrex Over Edge?
I’ve an Etrex 20 and an Edge Explore. I use the latter more but still tend to pick the Etrex for multi-day off-road trips, partly because of battery life/replacability and partly because I have OS maps on it. The phone connectivity is a major plus for the Edge, and the main reason I use it most often.

Re: Bivvy a Month 2021
As mentioned elsewhere, I did the Trans Cambrian Way last weekend, timing it perfectly to get three days of dry and sometimes sizzling weather while those at home endured a deluge. However, we were taking it easy and staying at campsites, so that left me still needing to do a July bivy. With a very ...

Re: Boners on the Gower.
Looks ace and I’m really sorry I missed it. I’d double-booked and instead did the TCW for the first time in what I’m guessing were once-in-a-lifetime bone-dry conditions.

Re: Thoughts on waist bags
I hve the Osprey with the bladder and a similar Camelback one. I prefer the Osprey and have been using it for tools, tube and water on most day rides. As with any waist pack, it’s uncomfortable if overloaded, so I tend to only half fill the bladder and rarely use it on rides where I’m packing an ext...

Re: Saddle for all day comfort
Luckily, my lardy arse seems happy with a fairly wide range of saddles. I tend to use a Charge Spoon or the Madison equivalent on MTBs. I find them as comfy as anything else for long rides. On the road bike I have a knock-off of the Specialized Power saddle. Not done great distance on it yet but it ...
