Re: Interesting stove concept

Mug handles might hold it up too, if it's a tight fit. Doesn't look like a very wide base to hold a mug full of water though. I use a conical windshield with two of the (otherwise useless) terranova titanium tent pegs stuck through it to hold the mug up. Use hexi blocks under it too as I think they'...

Re: Cairngorms Loop(s) advice.

Agree, inner loop has much more hike a bike. You'll enjoy any of it more on an MTB than a gravel bike too (although doable on a gravel bike and at least it's light to carry!).

Re: Q for parents- finding time to ride

It does get easier to get out as they get older. Mine are 6 and 8 now and we get to have good bike rides together sometimes, although low expectations are key! When they were really young I found going early was good. 6am feed then out the door for 3-4 hours usually meant I was back for a lazy famil...

Re: Are there any bikepacking events with "Motivational actors." ?

The first Perth Enduro had someone on a trumpet at the top of the first big climb. Lots of star wars themes etc. Lots of competitors dressed up too, felt slightly disturbed following a rider dressed as Franknfurter from Rocky Horror down a steep muddy chute!

Re: HT550 2021

I left my etrex 30 on for the whole of the CL300 with Lithium's in it (I was broken after 181k on the first day!).

Was showing 20% left after 37 hours. I was very surprised as I'd packed a spare set and was sure I'd need them! It wasn't particularly cold though.

Re: Decanting Smidge into smaller bottle

I've decanted into an old eye drop bottle so I've always got a little in my tool kit. Seems to work fine.

The pump spray used to have a screw top but all the ones I've bought after it first came out are sealed.

Re: Custom dry bags?

It's the 2.92oz hybrid DCF with a face fabric Reg so I'm hoping it's durable. Not had it out yet so I'll report back! Only thing I didn't like is he uses a velcro end for the dry bag which I'm not convinced with, but it's custom so you can ask for what you want! Communication and workmanship are goo...

Re: Custom dry bags?

I got a double ended dry bag from Wild Sky gear too which I'm pretty happy with. Made out of cuben fibre though so not cheap for a dry bag.

Saved 190g over my Lomo one however so £ a g is remarkable.

Thanks, enjoyed that. I, too, thought it was HT Postman's path (which I haven't done as it's not in the "summer" gpx I downloaded). Looks like good riding though.

Re: For those who like clean bits.

Interesting! I looked at the price of US cleaners for doing the chain and decided to give deep fat fryer and Putoline a shot instead. Been reasonably impressed with it so far. It did the CL300 without getting oiled again, although it was a bit noisy on the uphills towards the end. Still shifted fine...

As a cheaper, but no excuse to buy new shiny, suggestion.

I copy GPS files to my Etrex 30x using my Samsung phone. It came with a USB to USB-C plug that I use the Garmin cable with. The Samsung "my files" app lets you copy stuff across.

Re: Highland Trail 550 -2021

I'll be keenly following your dot Steve. Think I leaned a lot from your attitude in Tomintoul on the CL300. You just need to keep plodding when you're feeling a bit flat. I ended up faffing and losing a lot of time doing things like stopping to take photos, as my head wasn't in it until I met up wit...

To Woodsmith - what length was the pole you used? They recommend a slightly longer pole for more recent versions that lifts the bathtub up a bit. I originally got a pole slightly too short from Stu and had to order a longer extender.

I've got the side plates for the rack and they work well. I used it for bikepacking before I learned to TLS. Use it with mini Ortleib panniers though.

I tend to use Sugru for semi-permanent adjustments like this. You could maybe mold a shim to angle the bracket.

Re: An interesting idea

I'd thought about doing similar with an Alpkit Gordon on the front carrier. Taking it off for things like Larig an Laogh or the East bank of Loch Lomond on the WHW. You'd need to know in advance that it was a serious hike a bike to make it worth it. Decided it was a faff too far and didn't pursue. I...

I got blown off a couple of times, at one point to screamed expletives into the wind, didn't do much but made me feel a little better. Lots of good memories. Thanks again. Ian Martin Think I just ducked out of the gust to put my fleece on at that point! Pretty sure I could've been more sympathetic ...

Re: Cairngorms loop 2020

Enjoyed that thanks Bob. It was me with the Tarp lofted high, to be honest I was too tired to figure anything out properly at that point and just tied it to various branches on the tree. The wind loosened it up overnight. Kept the rain off enough for a few hours sleep though. Took me quite a while t...
