Re: Packing - what do you put where?

Here's a shot of the bike in touring mode when we reccied the northern loop of the HT550 https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-05j-01DM4sI/WQja28rrpzI/AAAAAAAAJyw/q4_IRVErdPoQUvLpMsBElvRzSHQcJOTMACLcB/s1600/ht-nl-13.jpg You can see the bag under the downtube, difficult to distinguish due to the dark peat behin...

Re: oh noes another what kit thread! bear with me though...

Alpkit would probably fit you out with most of that.

7giR as the tarp (I might have got that backwards!) https://www.alpkit.com/products/rig-7 You'll need a pole or poles - cheapest is to use some from an old tent and cut to length.

Re: One bike?

I think I'd struggle with one as anything more suited to off-road wouldn't cope with road and vice versa. The Cotic Solaris is probably closest and is certainly my (almost) do-it-all off-road bike with just the fat bike filling in the gaps. I use the Croix de Fer as my commuting and winter road bike...

Re: Packing - what do you put where?

The dreaded answer: it depends. For general touring trips I'll pack according to need and usage. So stuff I'm only likely to need for the bivy will go in the bag on the bars and spare clothing in the seat pack; stuff that I need during the day will go in Stem Cells/Feed bags or whatever you want to ...

On a more positive (looney?) note, Ashley Benns is on his way to complete a triple TDR :o http://trackleaders.com/tourdivide17i.p ... enns_Yo_yo

According to the TDR thread on bikepacking.net he and Billy Rice are the only ones known to have completed a Yo-yo

Re: How to insert pictures

They basically need to be somewhere that is publicly accessible so "on your phone" won't do. If your photos are copied automatically by Google to their servers then you should be able to make them public and post the link on here. Flikr, Imgur and similar sites are set up specifically for ...

If you are going to get all hoity-toity about it then surely it should be: "May I have a copy of the GPX please?"  Given the number of requests (using whatever form of broken English) there's been it could be quite a busy route over the next couple of months. When are you goin...

Re: 'Cheap' hubs?

It's an after sales upgrade as well should you so wish. It's only certain cassettes that cause the problem, possibly the 105 or Ultegra road cassettes as the gouging has happened on my road bike. I've only ever used XT cassettes (plus Hope extender) on the HT and have never seen the problem with tha...

Re: YD300 ITT - FAIL

As you found out, (North) Yorkshire is a bloomin' big county, the biggest in England. If you aren't familiar with the Dales it's worth having a paper map (the Harveys/BMC one is probably best) as understanding which dale is over a particular hill isn't always obvious. If you'd headed up the Roman Ro...

Re: YD300 ITT - FAIL

Tough luck. Getting to shops (and particularly the DBC) with an 0800 start is hard enough, a late start throws all the timings out. The cafe at Castle Bolton shuts at 1630 for example. With low population density there's not a lot of financial incentive to have long opening hours. There used to be a...

Re: Waterproof Shorts Recommendations

The item in the ZPacks link is for walkers/hikers, I was thinking something closer to an apron but with some material round the back. From the side the hem would be at a steep angle leading from the back down to the front. Sort of like an old fashioned cycling cape but from the waist rather than the...

Travelling with CTC bike bags

I know some on here use them but this thread http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic ... -poly-bags on STW would indicate that for some routes at least it will no longer be an option.

Re: Waterproof Shorts Recommendations

I had an idea (it's OK, you can pick yourself up off the floor now) but it might have been something I've seen at some point during various web searches. Why not use something akin to a paddler's spray deck? Longer at the front to cover your knees, a lightly elasticated hem to help stop it flying up...

Electronic gears are all very well but at over £220 :o for the cheapest Di2 rear derailleur you are going to hope that you don't prang it. But then, when was the last time you fubarred a rear mech? I can't remember ever doing it. I've rented a road bike with Di2 and while it was nice, I didn't feel ...

Ah, yes, Occupation Road. It's been improved in recent years but it's still appalling - boulders or pools of indeterminate depth each with their own oil slick from 4x4 misuse.

10x10 for me now. Will be interesting to see where it takes me next year. Back up to 11x11 but I've got seven of them  Need a few "cheeky" diversions to fill in some of the missing squares. One current goal is to get my Dales/Pennines visited tiles linked up with those in the Lakes. ...

We were on holiday in Scotland at Roy Bridge doing various bits of riding and decided to have an overnight "bothy trip". We got the train to Corrour in the afternoon and rode down to Loch Treig then up the valley of the Abhainn Rath to Meanach bothy, stopped there overnight then took the t...

From a comment on STW I checked and it seems that Cyclorise aren't importing Backcountry Research kit any more. The page shows most items out of stock and discontinued - http://www.cyclorise.com/backcountryresearch.html with a clearance sale link on the front page.

I've the Exped Synmat Winterlite. One of the internal welds failed (possibly user error from over inflating then kneeling on it) but it was replaced under warranty. Unless you are a fairly static sleeper then get the wider versions as the standard model (certainly in the tapered versions) is quite n...

I never used photobucket but signed up recently for imgur. Seems OK, right click a photo and you get various options of code to paste into forums like this, click on the option and then paste here (or there).
