Re: Sad week.....

i stick to 1 Fast and light hardtail 1 Full suspension for playing out 1 Road 1 Tour that's about right IMO though i'm currently at: 1 HT 26er (fun, with a longer 120mm travel fork) 1 HT 29er (more XC/bikepakcing-ish) 1 Road (just gone from a steel Planet X 'Kaffenback' to a 'SL Pro Carbon') and......

Re: Sad week.....

The guy that collected my Boardman full suss asked me what I'd bought instead, we both looked sad when I said "nothing". I think he felt my pain. have been there - an awkward moment for sure. you definitely need to do something about it! not about the number of bikes but the road-to-mtb r...

Re: Atlas mountains....?

Thanks for that - I've got a few more quick questions if that's cool: When you say "freezing" are will literally talking about it being genuinely and seriously VERY cold? If this happens (very early stages of planning right now) it'd likely be in March which I'm guessing might be even cold...

Any/all input appreciated.

Re: 'Low carb' diet

I'm starting to believe that a reduced carb diet rather than a zero or low carb diet is the way forward. that's what i like about The Paleo Diet for Athletes book as it (sensibly in my opinion) deals with the inherent carb requirements of endurance sports and offers training and nutritional advice ...

Re: Is it always about the bike?

up until the beginning of 2012 i'd have answered "no - the bike is only part of the whole picture" but since discovering bikepacking it's definitely become mostly about the bike (with a sniff of everything else thrown in). also, being out of action for a while at the same time as having a ...

Re: 'Low carb' diet

WOW - I have ZERO energy right now!!! I am about 10 days into my new Paleo regime and my body is clearly suffering carb (sugar) withdrawal. How long before I become 'fat adapted'??? I'm off tomorrow for a two day ride with a night in the woods but right now I can't imagine managing the first climb n...

Re: TransPyr anyone....?

No worries - it'd be nice to hook-up for a ride one day though.

It's fair enough as heading down to the Pyrenees is a big trip in itself (nevermind the riding)

Re: New Bike Time

The only thing that phases me, is the frame/headset/fork combo, everything else is easy enough. it's not that tricky. i always just knock headset cups in using something soft (like a bit of wood and a mallet) and gently tap it into place making sure that it's evenly inserted and sitting straight - ...

Re: New Bike Time

It's a very satisfying feeling building a whole bike from scratch. I thoroughly enjoyed building the wife's Niner earlier this year. agreed! nothing beats heading out on a bike you've built from scratch - every bolt was tightened by you - every component is there because you chose it (not because t...

Re: TransPyr anyone....?

I'd quite like it to be sunny please that's a short list of requirements but a hard one to cater for! I'm going to dip out now as I'll probably go to Scotlandia for a few days instead. bugger - maybe next time....? Well the wife has said I could go but she had drunk a bottle of wine, still needs me...

Re: TransPyr anyone....?

Think you might find that it is fairly mountainous rather than hilly fair enough - let's call it 'fairly mountainous' :P and it needn't be expensive (obviously 'expensive' means different things to different folks). a return train from St Pancras to/from Bordeaux comes in at about £200 (if booked i...

isn't particularly cheap nor is it SS friendly but it's pretty and rides bloody lovely!!!

ok, ok, if you insist on those two criteria then i'd agree that the Inbred looks like the way forward.

Re: TransPyr anyone....?

ok, well then let's say the beginning of May then as that seems to suit.

have been looking at various possibilities route-wise but more just for inspiration at this point than for planning purposes (as i've never ridden in the Pyrenees) - it looks like a doozy of an area!

TransPyr anyone....?

I'm planning my next big(ish) trip and just thought I'd mention it in case anyone fancies coming along or has any helpful information/advice to offer up that might make the planning/execution easier and simpler. The rough plan right now is to take 1-2 weeks to bikepack from the Med to the Atlantic (...

I've got a few of those Sports Direct mugs now (though they keep breaking). Expect to see some pictures of t...

Re: 'Low carb' diet

Also I looked up what Mark Sisson (quite an authority on Paleo) has to say about it. Very interesting article here that suggests a low carb rather than full-blown keto-adapted diet is preferable if you still want to have the ability to effectively burn both glucose and fat... Thanks for the link to...

Re: Klymit Sleeping mats

i got one of the karrimor x-lite mats from field and trek for £30 and it's comfortable, cheap and only weighs 300g.

i can't comment on it's R rating as i used it in pretty warm weather but i don't see how it'd be much different to a Neoair (and it's a crap-load cheaper!).

worth a look.

we use chestnut flour - it's got a really nice taste.

not sure about sourcing it in the UK but it's worth investigating.
