Re: Cairngorms loop sept?

Looks like everyone’s being held up near Gaick lodge at the crossing - the water must be mental as you can normally ride across! JayTwizzles tracker:

Re: What's the weekend got in store?

I normally help out with that event. For a few years I was the singer, de-signer (which meant I was always at the tale end of the ride as I can't take the signs in until the last rider is through). Last couple of years I've been a travelling mechanic, on a yellow Suzuki. I gave it a miss this year ...

Re: What's the weekend got in store?

Same as every year, I'll be doing Ride the North. Two days of roads swamped with roadies is the exact opposite of my normal preference, but we always have a good group from work together and a meal in Elgin the Saturday night, so it's nice to be a sociable cyclist for a change!

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

Not done July yet, but June was a short ride up the coast line to the North of Aberdeen for a beach on a work night. Unfortunately the casual last minute nature of this one resulted in me leaving my phone sitting in the garage, so no pictures till I got back! I also decided to try out bivying withou...

Re: Hunt gravel wheels, any opinions?

Not the specific wheels you're looking at but I have been running the Hunt Aero Light Disc wheels on my bike for the last three years and haven't had an issue, despite using them through some minging weather at times. It's a good package too, with a spoke key, qr adaptors and spare spokes the correc...

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

My May bivy for 5/5 was a big 237km ride from Aberdeen to Fort William to retrieve my car after using it to ferry me and some friends across the country for a coast to coast ride the week before. Rather than just set out early and do it in a oner, I took it as a chance to knock out my May BAM by hea...

Re: Bivvy a month 2019

I'm well behind on posting my bivies, so here is April, for 4/4 which was a late night excursion to pick up some VVE squares before bivying in a wee forest near Midmar. No tarp required: http://highlanddrifter.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/IMG_4600-1280-768x576.jpg Some squares required offroad div...

Re: Those SOL bivvy bag things

Back to the original question, I used my SOL Escape Bivvy for the first time without any sleeping bag for my June bivy and it worked quite nicely. I wore a lightweight down jacket and had some knee warmers which I slid down to cover the gap between my shorts and socks. Just had an uninsulated Klymit...

Re: Laminating printed maps

I used to go the lamination route but folding them was a pain and if using them for cycling you ended up with a fair bit of bulk on long distance rides. I eventually reverted to using those clear binder things (poly-pockets?)for sticking in folders. You can lob two sheets or more back to back inside...

Can also recommend the Kalf Terra shorts - dead comfy, not too flappy or long.

Re: Your bike collection

My collection is mainly predicated by my inability to let go of a bike that still works! Not many exciting things here, but all well used. On One Inbred 26" - Had this one the longest. I got the frame 2nd hand in 2004 and built it up with the intention to ride the GDMBR on it - haven't quite ma...

Re: Highland Trail 2019

This is making me feel much less gutted about not riding again this year - good luck to all those persevering through the conditions, hope they stay safe. This is very similar to the Cairngorms Loop a couple of years back where I was 3rd man home and also last due to the humongous scratch list that ...

Re: Highland Trail 2019

They're doing an Independent Time Trial (ITT), which you can start at any time so they are further round the route at the moment. Only people in Saturday's Group Start get the blue and pink markers. Hope that makes sense!

Yes, I'm glad you got it sorted - I've been one of you regular readers since your Tour Divide account. Re: Another first world problem!

I think it depends on the terrain - I think you'd get through fine either way, but you're probably going to come out of it in better condition with a plus tyre setup. I wish I'd had my bike in it's current 29x3" guise for the HT550 rather than the 29x2.35" I did use - my left hand might ha...

Re: Bubbler GPS tracker

I've been trying out a similar app for the same purpose called GibbyTrip on the iPhone. The advantage over using this instead of Garmin Live Track or Strava Beacon is that it uses much less battery on the phone and GPS unit, probably due to the polling frequency and no need to have the Bluetooth con...

Re: Merino, or other base layers?

I think merino is nice as a layer, just not as a base layer. Most effective for me have been the mesh base layers, which come in various different flavours and make even sweaty oiks like me feel comfortable when working hard.
