Re: 3/4 length sleeping mats
Cold feet keep me awake, consequently I've always accepted the (small) weight penalty of a full length mat. HYOH  This has always been my approach true. Have never tried a 3/4 length mat, so is based purely on theory, however. It's always struck me as a slightly odd way to save weight. You wo...

Dark art. People always say this about wheelbuilding. Is it something professional wheelbuilders spread to protect their business? It takes a bit of time and fingers not made entirely of butter, but if you get a good guide (hello Roger Musson) and follow it carefully, it's really quite straightforw...

Re: Fatpackers: 26x4 v 27.5x3
I used 4” jumbo jims for gbduro in 2019, ran em at around 14psi so it was still run off road and it was perfect on tarmac. I was going to mention this, but couldn't remember who it was! I regularly bring this up when discussing whether fat/plus tyres are draggy on the road. It seems the ultimate re...

But mainly that the testicles of honeybees explode with an audible noise (bang?) for mating. From some book full of unnecessary knowledge from the animal kingdom (can't remember the name). I learnt from an ecologist friend the other day that queen bees (unsure which species, or all) are able to sto...

Re: multi day trip. self sufficient or local services ?
I'd say the same - take a small stove and mug/small pot, stuff for a brew, and maybe a basic meal or two just in case - dehydrated meal or packet of cous cous, bit of porridge with some fruit/nuts/whatever mixed in, just in case. Doesn't weigh much and gives you the peace of mind that you'll always ...

No probs. BTW, I tried something similar a while ago - think I used 15mm conduit and webbing straps, but the principle was the same. It didn't work as well as it did in my head because I imagined the conduit sticking straight out horizontally, but in reality there was nothing else to hold it up, an...

Re: What happened to 24 hour racing?
I've occasionally been tempted by one. The Kielder Chiller is near me, and the Strathpuffer seems like one of those things you should experience. But I've always thought "do I want to ride round the same trail dozens of times in a 24 hour period, or spend the same time exploring somewhere inter...

Re: Wtd: carbon fibre tubing
Does it need to be carbon fibre? A bit of plastic waste pipe or conduit that length isn't going to be much heavier, and probably strong for whatever you're planning to do with it. Two of these? https://www.toolstation.com/solvent-weld-straight-coupling/p81292 Actually... You're right. I had thought...

Agreed. It's harder to align the valve with the logos because you...

Re: sub standard rant time
Find the valve quicker (like in winter, when snow is hiding it) But surely it's easy to find the valve in those circumstances as it's opposite the logo on the hub. Which I thought was a similar reason to lining tyre logos up: shows attention to detail. There's no practical reason to line the hub lo...

U-Switch  . ...doesn't ring up and haggle for me, presumably? So I'd be left paying the advertised rate. For broadband anyway. Energy is different - no variation in the "product" and no costs for switching (unless you're leaving a contract early) so I'll whore away. Though having sa...

And now we're ranting, let's double down. Just had a letter from Plusnet that they're going to increase our broadband charges by CPI +3.9%!!!! . Same as BT did a while ago for our landline in fact (subsidiary). Never mind that, it then says EVERY YEAR FROM NOW ON by CPI+3.9%!! How the hell does tha...

you won't be walking to Aldi after a few tinnies of those! :-S :-P Would take me a while to get through more than one  Just had a St Mars of the Desert Amber Koelship IPA. Very nice - a juicy IPA yet subtly malty. Winner in my book. Taken it down a notch with an Aldi "Studio 54" IPA ...

A new 160mm rotor for the back end of my BigBro which on the weekend became a donor bike for my Fatty after, while swapping between wheel sets, I managed to round out one of the disc bolts and decided to leave it well enough alone. Another classic example of my utter lack of mechanical sympathy cos...

Re: Anyone ridden Badger Divide, Glasgow parking?
Yes, north to south. It was the Scotduro event - pretty certain this follows the Badger Divide route exactly. We followed the route faithfully and not that familiar with the areas it goes through, so can't recommend any diversions. It was great route though, I really enjoyed it. The only bit I found...

Re: Anyone ridden Badger Divide, Glasgow parking?
I rode it last year on my gravel bike on 40mm Nanos, mainly because I was riding it over two days with mates who were similarly biked. I found it fine and enjoyed the descents, but my mate on Gravel Kings was struggling on some of the looser descents. If I was doing it at a more relaxed pace, or eve...
