Re: How is it .....

Marketing aside, I do think it looks really nice. I'm not that keen on the Ingrid crankset, but the rear mech is very aesthetically pleasing (the price, not pleasing). 27.2 makes a lot of sense for an XC/endurance bike, to design in a bit of flex comfort, and there's plenty of dropper options. Any ...

Re: Todays ride

Just a nice, normal ride. Hour and a bit fitting around work and child commitments, as normal. However, I'm regularly thankful that I can stitch together mixed-terrain local routes that go through beautiful places and terrain, and a great mix of trail types. Below is a long avenue of poplars on a ni...

Re: New tyres Part 2 29ers

Mezcals in 2.35 are a tad undersized (mine were on 29mm rims), so i wouldn't go for them. I've got a 4C compound mezcal 2.6, and it's decent. Good profile on 30mm rim, has been strong, including a recent Snowdonia trip in the p1ssing rain. Sorry, I got mine for £25 just before Covid :o XR2 is a grea...

A 2013 Ragley bigwig frame for a very bargain price on eBay. It's going to be a replacement for a 26er inbred frame as my town bike, so I can use old spare 29er wheels and tyres which I have plenty of. Should build up to a nice utility 29er with the parts I have :-bd

Re: Never legal to wildcamp on Dartmoor?

A good result, thank goodness! I had to laugh at the Darvall's response: "This case highlights the many and increasing challenges we face in trying to protect the fragile environment on Dartmoor. Our mission was to conserve this special place. It is regrettable that our role as custodians is gr...

Re: What are you reading now?

Just finished Orwell's Roses by Rebecca Solnit. A really interesting read, especially if you like Orwell, which I do. Oh good reminder, I like both Orwell and Rebecca Solnit, and this was on a 'mental note to self' reading list I had inevitably forgotten! Finished reading - and savouring Cormac's S...

Brake pads and Hutchinson Tundra's in 700x40 size. Tyres look like they'll come up big, and tread is decent. Bit of a last role of the gravel bike dice (possibly), to put mid size tyres in 700c that will be fit and forget, leave plenty of clearance for mud and mudguards, do well in most conditions o...

Re: Shimano caliper - micro leaks

Had some Elixir R brakes back in the day - total crap, that was the last sram brake for me. Not had too many issues with Shimano (good old M755s didn't leak!) but Magura often looks a decent alternative, maybe not stonking power, but reportedly reliable at least?

Re: Shimano caliper - micro leaks

Can you mix and match Shimano and Hope? no for the reasons you mention, might work for little while but its not going to work long term Hope RX4 caliper comes in mineral or dot options so you can put them on Shimano or SRAM hydro drop levers. Mostly a flat mount option now, but they would work with...

Nothing like dealing with the right priorities - could as easily be said for councils harassing rough sleepers, as it is for government focussing on small boat crossings and culture war skirmishes.

Re: Bikepacking hall of fame?

Good call on Jenn. It was her articles in singletrack and Whatmtb that piqued my interest in the Tour divide, plus it was a great article in its own right. Intrigued by what those 'issues' were...might have to look that up. I'd also give another vote for Cass Gilbert. Been following him for a very l...

That one looks lovely, but kinda proves my point, it is 50 to 75 quid a night minimum 2 night stay... doesn't help if you're travelling through and want basic but not boutique... :???:

I'm more inclined to try and use them now, and sad to see my nearest one on the list (Streatley). Re: New tyres Part 2

Both my mezcal sizes went up very easily. There is a difference in drag between the 2.6 and 2.35 (especially as i've found the 2.35 a bit undersized on a 29mm rim, 2.6 is true to size) but it's not huge, and the 2.6 has enough cush to cope with fairly chunky stuff.

Re: New tyres Part 2

As others above, I use a mezcal 2.6 front and 2.35 rear most of the year round, more than capable and decently fast. Also have an XR2 which as said, is fast, strong, surprisingly grippy, and well priced.
