Re: Do you like giant cassettes?

Durability is so subjective and becomes important as the cost increases. If you buy expensive cassettes and chains you want them to last so it's reassuring to hear your experience. Intersting that the article confirms what I have read elsewhere, that the new narrow chains last well. Durability is a...

Re: Where would you live in the UK...

Got no strong views on this either way but it does intrigue me that people hanker for remote places or a country-cottage-with-roses-over-the-door just when they're getting to the stage when they may well start to need some obliging person to wipe their bum, or be able to drive their scooter on the ...

compromise in terms of ratios, chainline, durability, how fussy it is to tune into and maintian good shifting etc. Any source about compromise of durability, tune and maintain good shifting? Have you ever set one up yourself? Definately much easier and faster than faffing about with two mechs. It r...

Re: Do you like giant cassettes?

Chainline - set it once and forget about it. No different in that respect to 2x or 3x setups. Durability - changed the cassette and chain the other week. They'd been on for two years. I might get better life out of a more expensive cassette and chain but I don't know. YMMV, HYOH, etc. The chainline...

Re: Do you like giant cassettes?

When 3x and 2x was the thing it was straightforward to get the ratios you wanted and even some spare capacity in reserve... 1x may be great in some ways but there is always talk of where you have to compromise in terms of ratios, chainline, durability, how fussy it is to tune into and maintian good ...

Re: Do you like giant cassettes?

The 10t sprocket must wear pretty quickly? Probably not a problem when you are mainly off road and use it to help you on shallow downhills on the odd bit of road or smooth track but for sustained use it seems a bit dinky.

Re: Apparently this bothy is on the HT550, which is it?

I have spent a night there. Stove chimney wasn't comnected when I was there last. I'm not sure if you are 'allowed' to sleep there but nobody turfed us out. There are camp spots nearby too and the ride down the glen is really nice. The estate is doing some interesting things land management wise,. O...

Re: More Bottom brackets

More BB talk, but less controversial this time. I’m sizing everything up for a belt drive. I need to get a perfect chain line using a square taper axle. So.... if the axle length changes the change one can expect at the drive side is half that of the overall change. Is that correct? Eg. Current len...

Re: A 'gravel bike' for mountain bikers.

As a mountain biker, I've always struggled with the idea that 'gravel' bikes as something that greater opportunity. In my experience, most gravel bikes actually hinder where and what I might choose to ride. Yes, I would feel differently had I approached things from a road background but I haven't s...

Re: Taking a knife to a gunfight.

Ok let me re word that. There are no good gravel roads south of the border apart from fire road double tracks and the odd stretch here or there..... And there is nothing "local" to me whatsoever. I'd say that if you don't mind riding in NRW forest, Wales has a fair amount of gravelish roa...

Well the advert must be working to some extent because even though there is a bloke with a sore throat spouting cac, it got us all looking at it and I had no idea that Focus made those bikes before.

Not that I would buy one mind.

The Tailfin cages look interesting but I'm not sure they stand away from the forks looking at them.

My Stooge Scrambler IMG_0381.jpg What's it like? Are they making any more? It's fantastic. Like a big BMX I guess, but it settles into bikepacking duties really well too. Stooge have previously only done one production run of each frame. All the Scrambler frames have now sold, but I reckon there wi...

Not mine... And the cable routing seems a bit weird but just in case: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Surley-Karate-Monkey-XL-Rohloff-29er-Disc-Rigid-Steel-USED/184580156254?hash=item2af9d5ab5e:g:ZNUAAOSwQHVf15OP I am not sure that a K Monkey makes the easiest conversion as compared to an Ogre, ECR, etc.
