I find the thousand yard stare mixed with ordering two main courses and two or three Cokes each is a dead giveaway

Re: HT550 Northern Loop - The Video
Enjoyed that. Brought back some good memories, and glen Canisp. Same on all counts actually. I'd forgotten how good that descent from Achfary to Kylesku was, after the horrible messy climb through the logging to reach it though. Also the descent into Achfary (just before the horses on the video) wa...

Yep, still on for this, potentially with one or two more. I'm still planning to ride down, which takes a little under 3.5hrs from Balerno to Peebles if there are any takers?

My only plans next year are Puffer, Cairngorms Loop and HTR. Perhaps the Shindig if Bryan runs it again, and I'd like to get another long trip late summer if I can.

Interesting - I've got one on order as I wanted something bigger than my existing Moonlite but still lightweight. How small is too small? It'll fit a mat and bag though, won't it?FLV wrote:I briefly tried a Terra Nova Discovery Lite, but it was too small and had no mossie net for when its not raining

Re: Bikepacking in W Highlands
I'd definitely recommend reversing the route too. The Corrieyairack Pass would be a horrible climb in that direction, whereas from Laggan you've really only got half an hour of crap as it's quite gentle an approach up. My advice re bothies - if you're approaching Blackburn, keep checking the map for...

OK, first impressions of the Module 100:
The material used seems quite heavy, and the drawstrings are bulkier than they need to be. I'm going to see if I can pare the weight down a bit, but it still seems a good weight and size for the price. The true test will be an October bivi...

I have a 10000mAh one that does me for a week of iPhone and GPS, but it's quite bulky, so I bought a cheapie on eBay for £4 which will give me three Garmins or a Garmin and an iPhone charge - perfect for an overnight

Re: Hike a bike - your view
If you've got somewhere to go, hike a bike to get there is acceptable. I find that no matter how soul destroying a push can be, if you push through it to where you were intending to go then it really isn't that bad at all. I'll happily push, drag or carry my bike up a hill if I have an inkling that ...

I saw on Strava that you'd done that - well done, as it's definitely one of the toughest parts of it.
How did you find the Bealach Horn, especially where you see the valley you need to descend into then back out of?

I also meant to say thanks to everyone that managed to make it up for this. I had a great time and hope you all did too. Re: lightweight sleeping bag for October weather
Rab Module is £70 on Sport Pursuit but it's only a top bag. I used a Cumulus Quantum 350 at the weekend and was too warm - it's good to -6 and weighs 700g.

Re: Pinch Flats on Heavy Rear Wheels
I'll add my vote to tubeless. Bear in mind though if you've had a load of pinch flats already, check the rims to make sure there are no dents before you try to seal the tyre - tubeless will stop punctures but it's useless if the rim has a dent that the bead can't seal around.

Re: PSA: Rab sale
I always thought the Module was a bit portly for a bag with 100g of down and no zip or hood. I imagine the weight might be a result of the Primaloft beneath the legs? Yeah, that and the bungees etc underneath. I don't think Rab's bags are particularly light for their temperature rating though. The ...

PSA: Rab sale
I'm unsure what the unwritten rules are around that flash sale discount site that covers many different sporting pursuits, but they've got a Rab sale on at the moment. Crucially, they've got the Module top bag for £70, so I've picked one up as a lighter alternative to my Cumulus bag. 530g is pretty ...

The bar roll looks like it only attaches by wrapping round the bars, so where do cables go? What prevents it rolling over the top when you hit the bumpy stuff?

Re: Blizzard bag as a one night bivi?
They're not breathable so you can't really sleep in any clothing as it'll end up wet ... they are fairly warm though. Once opened, the packsize is pretty big, certainly bigger than most 1 - 2 season sleeping bags. I'd rather carry the extra weight and know I can sleep if required. Thanks. Packsize ...

Blizzard bag as a one night bivi?
I've got a Blizzard survival bag (the ones with the honeycomb structure between the silver layer), which remains in my pack on long day trips where I don't have a bivi. However, I'm planning a ride which might involve some impromptu dozes or an overnight if I'm too burst to continue, so was thinking...

Re: HTR 550 Grand Depart Qualification
Lakeland200 is a cracking ride. I did most of it last year and it is possible in a long day, but for the HTR you will want some bivvy practice so you could do the ride with a short bivvy and still manage sub 30 hours reasonably comfortably. Good luck If you want a good mix of daylight and bivi, the...
