Anyone tried The Protein Works meals as an alternative to the usual suspects?

Cheaper, but need to make up your own pouches, or rehydrate them in the pan, but they look an interesting alternative.
Vegan, if that's your thing.

Re: A proposal for Gravel Bikes (TM)
Not quite what I meant. While you can ride/walk on forestry roads they are permissive rather than public (unless a BW or FP is aligned with them). They aren't actually public thoroughfares maintained by the local highways authority. Does it matter who maintains them? And it's not just forestry road...

In Scotland they are, at least for cyclists anyway, and there are loads of them.whitestone wrote: ↑Sun Jul 09, 2023 9:19 am Here in the UK we've basically none. There are forestry fire roads and the like but they aren't "public" in the sense that say the M6 is.

Re: Dynamo charging data
Fair point on the speed, but I'm not sure how linear the relationship is between speed and output. I'm doing a long audax this weekend and anticipate a moving average of 22-24kph - my usb charger kicks in at about 6kph and I don't know how much more power is generated at 22kph or 30kph. And regards...

Re: Dynamo charging data
Questions seem to pop up here quite regularly regarding how effective dynamo and usb charger combos are at recharging bits and bobs, so my inner nerd thought it might be useful to compare our own 'in the field' tests. I was really impressed with what my own combo put out on my commute this morning....

Re: Fitting a valve to a drybag
Just start the roll of the closure, say one turn, then with the bag upright, lean your weight on the top and you will find the air will be forced out. Once it's compressed, quickly pull up on the closure buckles and roll down a couple more turns.

Re: Fitting a valve to a drybag
Sorry if this has been done before, but stuffing a sleeping bag into a handlebar drybag, how do you not trap air? I'm thinking of fitting a one way valve, perhaps similar to that on my Vango aotrom mat (recommended btw), to let air out but keep water out. Easily done? Any suggestions? Just squeeze ...

Re: Glasgow central to Oban bike reservation confusion?
You wouldn't have had any problem taking your bike on the Central to Dalmuir sector, no bookings required to take bikes on any of the local Strathclyde trains, although you would have had to humpf your bike up and down the stairs of the overbridge between the two lines at Dalmuir.

Isobaa merino at sport persuit 50% off. No idea on the quality but just picked up a l/s top for 35 quid, about one third of the equivalent Smartwool. Anyone used the Talky Toaster maps of the Alps on an eTrex? Presume they as good as UK maps? Is there a way to check that they are actually there and working before travelling? I seem to remember the device defaults to where you are/it is and only shows that region?? I think you can zoom out and sc...

Re: Outdoor Active - is it now that we lose all our ViewRanger maps?
Thanks. I've been in touch with them and they have enabled my access to download my legacy mapping and it's working now. Bit ridiculous that they don't do it automatically, many ex Viewranger users will be paying out for an OA subscription unneccesarily if they don't know about it, but I guess that...

I think these are just some areas that have been cached while you were online, I don't think they are downloads as such. I get the same in some areas but I am unable to download anything and I had purchased tiles covering the whole of Scotland on Viewranger. This is what I get when I press the down...

Yes, agreed. That's been the same for some time sinceoving to OA. The free year subscription after being moved from Viewranger included the abi...

I have access to the whole of the UK and can download areas to my phone for offline use. Even if I'm zoomed out quite a way the download included the overview, 1:50k and 1:25k and changed as I zoomed in. I can't complain as on viewranger I only had the Isle of Wight and that was a free download yea...
