Thermarest Xlite Warmth Over the Years?

Have Neoair Xlites got warmer over the years? They are currently listed as an R value of 5.4 under the new ASTM system. I've got a 2013 vintage Thermarest Neoair Xlite, which is a great mat and despite a lot of patches is showing no signs of giving up the ghost. However, when camping (even in the he...

Re: Bivvy a month 2022

I've been meaning to do BAM for ages, but never quite got round to it... so have decided to make a concerted effort this year, especially seeing as my family were kind enough to band together and buy me an MLD eVent Soul bivy for Christmas, which I have lusted after for some time! I have to admit, m...

Re: Recommend me some Waterproof trousers like outdry

Outdry trousers are a thing but you never see them for sale anywhere, I know of folk who've run the Spine race in full Outdry top and bottom. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Columbia-Mens-Outdry-Gold-Pant/dp/B01JRFE4O6 Let us know if you manage to track any down. Jeez, they look like something out of a &q...

Re: Recommend me some Waterproof trousers like outdry

I've often toyed with the idea of finding some old OutDry jackets and cutting them up and reforming them into trousers, but never been brave enough! If I know its going to be dreadful weather all ride, I have some Royal Navy Surpless Goretex trousers that I cut into 3/4 length shorts, and then I wea...

Re: Which weather service?

In all seriousness I wish we could crowdsource this using local amateur forecasters who interpret the models along with their observations. Had this been done? Would be an ace community to create. That would be really cool! In the kayaking community, there are a few places that mix forecasts, live ...

Re: Which weather service?

I've personally found BBC and the MetOffice to have been really unreliable recently (year or so). There is an app on Android called windy that is quite good... Its more involved than just looking at a forecast, but allows you to select which of the major models you want to see. That's handy to see w...

Re: Favourite bar system, and dropper seat bag?

I mainly use the Alpkit Kanga and one of their lightweight dry bags with strap loops. Bomber stable and a pretty light combination. Have also tried the Salsa Anything handlebar mount and Specialised handlebar cradle. The Salsa is a bit porky and far forward and the specialised a bit fiddly, but I st...

Re: Buying from the states - taxes and fees

Just another point of reference that today I received a (slightly late) Christmas pressie from my wife & parents from Mountain Laurel Designs in the states. Shipped US Postal Service, customs form etc attached. The only slightly odd thing on it was the sender printed on the label was MLD, but th...

Re: Buying from the states - taxes and fees

Have a look and see what the declared value was on the import form. If its been declared wrong (low) then you might have flown under the limit. They said, I ordered a pile from Ruta Locura in the summer. Shipped from the States. Correct value on customs form. Never had to pay a penny in import duty....

Re: Thermarest Repair

I've a few field repair kit patches on mine. The oldest from about 2015 and to be honest, I've pretty much forgotten they are there. Never given any problems. I had to buy more of the stuff from eBay; its not that pricey if you need to replenish your supplies

Re: Waterproof riding trousers?

But you do need a bit of elastic to stop the ankles flapping into the chainwheel. I sliced a pair like that yonks ago but maybe that was before I sussed there's two studs at the bottom not just one. Not had a problem since I've been making sure I use the tighter 'setting'. The ventilation is good a...

Re: Waterproof riding trousers?

I second Berghaus Paclite for bikepacking. Nice how you can fully unzip them, and just keep buttons done up. But you do need a bit of elastic to stop the ankles flapping into the chainwheel. If you want something similar and cheaper, Berghaus Deluge are similar and half the price, twice the weight. ...

Not at the moment- no one seems to have stock
Unless my thread has precipitated a rush, Nordic Life is who I have used, and they had stock of most of the SuperThermo / SuperThermo Wool stuff the day I started this thread (I was ordering a backup!)

Gutted to be the one dissenting voice, but I've got a Brynje short sleeve that I've used for several months under various insulated and waterproof tops from plain roubaix through polar alpha to a Paramo Velez Light, and I still get wet and cold on my hour commute. I've tried the full spectrum of ve...

Brynje - Worth being disavowed!

So earlier today when wondering what to wear for a longish ride, I remembered that in the summer I had bought a Brynje wife-beater (although they call it mesh) baselayer when someone on here mentioned them going cheap.... upon arrival, my wife promptly told me I was never to be seen wearing it while...

Re: Anyone use a 'torch' for night riding?

I use an Armytek Wizard WR Warm. Armytek is a Canadian manufacturer of "tactical" torches. but the Wizard is a "right angle" torch. It comes with a headband so you can put it on a helmet easily. The "warm" stands for a warm LED, so the beam has slightly less "paper...

I use Eneloop AAs / AAAs too. But they are pretty heavy to be honest. One thing to consider is whether you can move to devices using Lithium 18650 batteries (a bit bigger than an AA, but much higher energy density). For example, my USB battery bank, handlebar light and headtorch now all run on remov...
