Re: New Bike Day
You must be (have been) seriously good on a dirt bike Duncan if you were giving the likes of Geraint a race. God status. Yeah, seconded. I remember reading about Geraint, Edmondson etc in T&MX when I was a youthful schoolboy trials rider. One of my mates later bought an ex Derrick Edmondson IT2...

I really like the Acepac ones you pick up from this very site. Rock solid and very reasonable price. I've used Alpkit ones in the past and last year upgraded and bought an Acepac one from Stu. I wouldn't say it's the lightest thing in the world but in terms of function it's absolutely bloody brilli...

Re: North York Moors
Years ago I put my wife off mountain biking forever by taking her on a ride on the NYM (I grew up near Whitby). Her bike clogged with sticky mud to the extent that the wheels jammed solid and she ended up throwing the bike at me and storming off to walk home. I'd agree that picking dry conditions is...

Re: Tyres, what you using ?
Ive used Conti X-Kings in both 2.2 and 2.4 sizes. I liked them a lot and had no problems using them tubeless (although I know others have struggled with them). The 2.4s weren't much wider than the 2.2s tbh. I've also used WTB Rangers in 2.6, I liked those as well but unfortunately the sidewalls were...

Outdry jackets showing as £108.50 for me now... Yep, they've gone up. Mine was £93 on Monday so the sale has ended or evolved. Maybe they'll go down again soon (if they're less than £93 I don't want to know though). I'm going to keep my eyes open for these in case they come down again in price. Wha...

Re: The post man's been ...
My new Outdry EX Reign jacket that I got from Columbia while reduced to £93 the other day arrived this morning. It looks good, a bit less rubbery looking than my other Outdry jacket and the extra ventilation provided by the pit zips (which my other jacket doesn't have) will be welcome. I'm not sure ...

Re: Hammock & Tarp
Yeah, I used my Rig7 as well and found it to be less than ideal (I used to use a DD Tarp XL canoe camping but it's really heavy and bulky). Luckily my buddy on the Loch Shiel trip had his DD Tarp XL with him (he was the driving force in wanting to hammock camp on that trip) and we were able to make ...

But saying that there sale ends soon is a bit like saying the DFS sale finishes soon.
Wait a month and there will always be another one

Re: Hammock & Tarp
My hammock camping set up was assembled for canoe camping where weight wasn't a real consideration so it's a lot more heavy and bulky than most of my ground sleeping arrangements. That said I have used it once for bikepacking and it was a godsend as the area where we stopped for the night (the banks...

Columbia Outdry EX Reign jackets are £93 down from £155 (with free shipping) on Columbia's website. As most will know, these jackets are a bit of a BearBones go to for ultimate foul weather protection. I already have the lighter weight version that's designed for trail running but have just bought o...

This is the most decent snow we've had in a while so it wasn't to be wasted. Re: Dogpacking
I'll be retiring my work dog in the next couple of months, he's a lovely dog but he's big and a bit of a handful at times so leaving him at home with Mrs J while I clear off bikepacking isn't going to be an option. This means that for a few years at least (hopefully more though) I'm going to be rest...

Re: New Bike Day
I'll be retiring in two years time (all being well) and I keep toying with the idea of getting a bike then as a retirement present to myself. The T7 was top of my wishlist but I'm erring towards a CRF300Rally now as I don't want/need to go fast and it's a bit lighter and a fair bit cheaper. I've bee...

I got the prism jacket, from sportsshoes.com, i think it's not the current version as it doesn't have a chest pocket, but the hand pockets are huge. it packs quite small. with the hood it quite warm. Pertex Quantum is new to me and if the DWR coating is durable a waterproof jacket won't be needed. ...

Montane Prism Ultra pull on jacket, from Trekitt reduced to around £70. Went for medium instead of my normal small in Montane and fits lovely. Lighter weight insulation than the standard Prism jacket, and no hood or hand pockets (or refectives, anywhere...). But seems snuggly warm and very packable...

Re: OS app. Any good?
I've been using OS Maps more recently (due to the gradual demise of View ranger) and have started to like it a bit more than I used to. I've not used it for huge long routes but it's been fine for day rides and overnighters. I like the snap to road feature which saves time when plotting routes and I...

Strips of old inner tube cut up work really well for lighting initially. It stinks when burning obviously but will light even when wet and takes up relatively little space and soon burns off allowing the fire to start and smell to dissipate. Most of us have old inner tubes lying about that will nev...

Re: OT Kelly Kettles
I have a large one and a smaller one, both bought for canoe camping. They work well enough for boiling water if you have a source of dry fuel (pine cones work particularly well) but I tended not to use mine much latterly based on the fact that there is rarely a source of dry fuel in the west of Scot...

Re: Exposure bar lights and Mr Jones
I don't use Jones bars (I tried them and don't get on with them) but I do have Redshift Kitchen Sink bars on my gravel bike which throw up the same issue. I initially tried using various tape and diy packing options but found that the light would tend to move on bumpy terrain so I googled 22.2mm-31....

Re: Bike packrafting a question for the weekend
I've had an Alpacka 42 for quite a few years now and only used it once for overnight raftbikepacking. By the time you carry the raft, paddle, pfd and all your normal bivi kit it's quite a load. It was a trip I would never have bothered with otherwise though so I'm glad that I did it. I've done a few...

Re: Tent stealthiness Green or Brown
Grey can be surprisingly stealthy on those drizzly misty moorland nights  I can see what you're saying Stu but the Lanshan is very light coloured, almost off-white rather than grey (would be good if you camp in the snow probably). My shitty brown one is fine anyway, it blends in quite well, i...
