Re: ever get proper fecked off with bikes ?

I previously pissed myself off with cycling to the extent that I stopped riding almost entirely for about ten years. I'd been a club roadie and semi-obsessed with racing but decided to stop competitive cycling. I used to ride to work a lot to "get the miles in" for fitness and winter condi...

Re: West Highland Way record

I remember when the Devils staircase was considered to be one of the gnarliest descents in the UK (90's) but since then so much other stuff has become available that its fairly middle of the road now. To be fair it's been sanitised at least a couple of times since then to help mitigate the millions...

I thought the standard answer for these soer of q's was Mtb batteries? I thought it was Torchy (the battery boy) off eBay...? I've used Torchy batteries a lot and not had any problems with any so far (over a few years) but he doesn't seem to hold the same level of stock these days. I think h...

Re: Thin but warm glove recommendations please

I have a couple of pairs of the 100% Brisker gloves that Shaf mentioned above. They're really good down to about 6 or 7 degrees but struggle below that, also hopeless in the wet. I use them often when I'm riding my mountain bikes as I hate bulky gloves for that activity but strangely I don't mind bu...

Re: Any winter under-helmet hat deals spotted?

I got a Castelli helmet liner thing earlier this year and liked it so much I bought a second one (wear one, wash one). I bought it to keep the sweat out of my eyes in summer(this never used to be a problem when I had hair but now I'm baldy it drives me nuts) but I'm still using them now. They do loo...

Re: West Highland Way record

To be fair the northern bit (north of Tyndrum) has some nice riding in stunning scenery and natural selection weeds out a lot of over ambitious walkers by then so it's not as busy as the southern bit. I've also enjoyed riding sections of the southern bit on my gravel bike when I've used them to crea...

Re: Anyone paddled the Wye?

I paddled some sections of it in a kayak (ancient glassfibre slalom boat) when I was a kid. My dad was into paddling and had done it before and we did some of the bits he'd enjoyed the most. We did Symond's Yat and portaged back up for another go (because it was fun). My memories are a bit vague but...

Re: What's the best for gravelw*nking - 700 or 650B

I think it depends on how you use your gravel bike really and how much you want your gravel bike to encroach into mtb territory. I use mine a lot on the road (I have a second set of wheels with 700x32 road tyres on) but also on mixed routes, often involving road sections, cycle path, forest/estate t...

Re: Lifter poles.

I use my bike as a lifter on my Gatewood (front wheel for one side and the rest of the frame for the other) but I fancy a pair of Stu's carbon lifters as an alternative option. I find using the lifter tie outs on this type of shelter gives you significantly more room inside.

Re: 9 speed MTB gearing questions

I have an 11-40 Sunrace cassette (1x9) on my spare/loaner fat bike. I dunno if it'd run okay with a 2x, 9speed rear mech but I am curious to try it on my bikepacking hardtail 29er (which is 2x9). FWIW the aforementioned bikepacking bike is currently running a 22/36 chainset and 11-34 cassette and I ...

He/she delivered a Lanshan 1 three season inner all the way from China. I bought this on the basis that it might work with my Gatewood Cape (possibly requiring some modifications). After a quick trial pitch the other night it turns out that it actually fits quite well albeit the clearance on the rea...

I dunno whether this is cheap enough to count as a bargain but if anyone wants to join the Bearbones/Outdry club Columbia have some reductions going on at the moment. We get issued with Goretex lined boots at work. We've had them from various brands (Haix and a few others I can't remember) but always with a Gore liner. I've Googled them out of curiosity and retail pricing has been around the £200 mark. The liner invariably fails on them due to wear from being fle...

Honestly I've found that I can get condensation issues with any tent depending on conditions. The worst ever was with my Trekkertent Stealth 1 when I managed to get the outer covering of my sleeping bag soaked but again I think that it was the conditions and pitch rather than the tent itself that wa...

That's a good idea. I had one of those torches, was a cracking little thing but found it way too floody to use on the road, was blinding everyone. Surprisingly good off road for a little torch, and user replaceable batteries too Hmm, well I use it regularly on the road when I'm commuting, I've not ...
